Absolute Banger. Probably going to finally write about this book this week.

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 31/08/2026

This episode had a lot of "we think we know how to write Black people but we don't really know how to write Black people" moments but that was the most egregious.

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 31/08/2026

Have enjoyed Lanterns so far, but episode 3 was...man...a lot. But I just want to be clear. One of the tests for making John Stewart fearless was...for him to walk home at night past groups of Black people?

There is no future dystopia fam. There is only now

000

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Ultimately, the weeks ahead look wilder than the fairly grounded pilot and I'll keep tuning in. I don't know how long the asshole mentor / John Stewart, legend and one of the four Corpsmen, as a subordinate can go before it feels grating, but these dudes know how to make TV so I'm curious to see it

020

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Which, I really do like Lindelof projects. But one of his shortcomings tends to be the willingness to include racial dynamics but handle them pretty clumsily. So this felt consistent, honestly. Throw the whole thing away bad? Absolutely not, but man...the ring ain't choose that, lol.

120

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

...but I would have rather have seen John demonstrate doing something incredibly risky to show his lack of fear (and willingness to act) as opposed to having something done to him in that way? I'm sure some folks loved that scene...I have an idea of that demographic, lol.

110

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

Which leads me to my least liked part of the first episode, the first five minutes. Like...the Stewart family dynamic. Let's just say, I'm very familiar with some Black military families and...I'm not sure who that intro was for. Well, I know who it wasn't for, lol. I won't go deep into the violence

141

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

I think people comparing it to True Detective is generous and maybe a bit of wishful thinking. The power dynamic is definitely more in line with Training Day and given the aesthetics is...a bit more problematic and probably why that isn't the obvious comparison we see from reviewers.

100

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

All the ring stuff was cool. I kinda dig how the Green Lanterns are all out in the open and has made Hal a celebrity. Kind of taking a page out of Guy Gardner's book on that but I'm ok with that (especially since we'll see Guy). But people referring to the ring as a WMD was accurate.

100

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

I think the 2 (3 if you're generous) timeline thing is cool and will probably be done well. Though the ending is sobering as hell and redefines what exactly the murder mystery is.

100

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 17/08/2026

So, some unofficial thoughts on #Lanterns pilot. Uh, I liked it, mostly. It's prestige TV for sure. Good performances. Definitely intriguing. I don't think the Aaron Pierre colorism conversation is coming up again, not because anything changed. But because its been a long time and he's really good.

The Furious gave us an Everyman with little skill, tons of hope, and took hand to hand combat to heights it ain't ever seen before in movies.

Colossal error on my part to forget The Prestige while ranking the Nolan Films, but otherwise and fun episode to record.

We really need to bring public shaming back because if Kendrick didn't already persuade people to stop playing Drake's music, this should make it ILLEGAL to knock his stuff.

161

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 26/11/2024

Aiight, if Drake ever drops “n__ga” in an interview or a track, we have to legitimately treat him like white folks. It has to be on sight and it has to be unquestioned.

My only issue with the Mustard! yell getting so much attention is that there are like three great meme worthy lines / hooks from that song we can work into the catalog. "But it's not enough", "TV off" / "turn this TV off" and "well, somebody's gotta do it" are all bangers for memes.

I say this as A's fan who Ichiro tortured for years, he should absolutely be unanimous. But so should a lot of players before him. Look at the current politic, that ain't happening in 2024 y'all.

Seeing the Ichiro for HOF or we riot posts and y'all must be on the premium package if you think *baseball writers* are making him only the second unanimous choice in history. I still think that Mariano's vote was a miscommunication between dudes that were supposed to follow protocol, lol.

As much as I have loved the Demon Slayer anime, I feel like the thing they have been trying to do with Tanjiro's empathy with the villain of the week actually translated into making the audience feel that in the latest DanDaDan episode. Just, heartbreaking.

William Evans @williamevanswrites.bsky.social · 18/11/2024

I had been thinking that DanDaDan was cute and enjoyable and incredibly ridiculous to the point where the novelty may wear off soon and then the latest episode was like the saddest funeral ever and gotdamn now you have my attention.
