This is how you accept a Best Actor gong (for “Chinatown”) — with a skit via satellite on the set of your next Movie (“One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest”) which will win you the Best Actor Oscar the following year. DAVID NIVEN & JACK NICHOLSON in 1975.

One thing that's always baffled me, they had huge amounts of paper, yet their only written record was scrawled in the margin of an earlier note. Made me wonder if it was a very hasty decision and little time to prepare - for whatever reason. They also took some very unnecessary provisions

I've always been far more interested in the attempted march and possible breakdown of discipline myself Then there's that book, can't remember the author, that says the Inuit massacred them 😐

Should be framed, a rare moment where Wellington doesn't have a huge rant

I read one that insisted Crozier died very early and Fitzjames commanded the march to the mainland - seen as his remains have been found that's obviously not the case. 0 evidence for it just seemed to make his version more interesting

Despite how much I read on that expedition, I'm never any closer to piecing together what happened

My third letter written by the Duke of Wellington, arrived today.

He's a singer who, once I got my own music taste and bought my own records, I already seemed to know. "Crystal Chandeliers" is a favourite of my mums, so I must have heard it when young. I really enjoy listening to him

The wonderful TREVOR HOWARD — born 113yrs ago today — explains in his gravel-voiced tones to Dick Cavett in 1971 how his entry into the Army was via being arrested at the Theatre in Harrogate and subsequent imprisonment.

Think I have about 30 of his LPs. Brilliant singer, seemed to be quite popular here in the UK, like Marty Robbins and Don Williams. 'The Snakes Crawl at Night' is one of my favourites

Despite being a famous Hollywood star if you want to know what sort of person DAVID NIVEN was, the largest wreath at his funeral was from the Porters at Heathrow Airport. It read: “To the finest gentleman who ever walked through these halls. He made a Porter feel like a King.”

It's 1978 and OLIVER REED makes his way through Guernsey Airport security onto a connecting flight to Libya - in dressing gown, tie & slippers. “I had a late night and was still feeling a bit tired this morning” said Reed.

Reading about Wellington's death, on the anniversary of his death, and blasting the Waterloo soundtrack

Bought a small snippet of a Wellington letter. FM The D of Wellington presents his compliments... Based on the small part available, very likely one of his rather short, abrupt notes to the general public - probably to refuse whatever they requested, as they all follow this style

Rather interesting. Very fortunate that his dutiful brother was King rather than Edward.

Yes he was very anti tourist at the tower of London (and anti soldiers bars I think too). I think I'd tremble if I was on the receiving end of one of his rants

At this angle looks like he's surveying the ground with his haughty gaze.

It's good how music can preserve memories. I'm a big Don Williams fan, recently learned my grandfather (who died long before I was born) had his tapes. This album is good, has a good selection of their material some I've not seen on other releases

They were a very underrated group, probably best remembered now because of Don Williams. I think my favourite songs they did were "It's Allright", "Morning Mama memories" and "The Proper Mrs Brown".

I wasn't aware the book existed, it was suggested on Abebooks whilst I was attempting to find some books totally different. I'm hopeful it will be interesting, perhaps put to bed some myths surrounding the ball or at least give some context

Can't stand AI. Found it quite upsetting when the man who was emailing me from publishers mentioned it may one day take editors jobs. Terrible, one for people with experience to lose, two for potential research to have an AI ruin it

Parachuting in, could become PM with only what, 25k votes from one constituency? Crazy, I don't understand why he's hailed as some saviour. Starmer was awful but not like this man is the answer

That's just absurd. Place is full of bots, or accounts that just spam AI posts. Engagement is dire, can't see how a real human can seem inauthentic. Sorry though that your account has gone, as I know you had a lot of connections on there

Hopefully they sort it, no idea if their team is any good though - I'd doubt it with how Musk has let that app deteriorate

Got my hands on Wellington's dispatches, and an incomplete set of his memoranda. Such a great set of books, as a source/reference point, but they also highlight just how intelligent a man he was

I hope you enjoy it! It's quite amusing from Wellington, it is both incredibly petty yet also brilliantly written at times. He was that annoyed by comments about Waterloo that he spent 9 months writing his own attack, as you do

Wellington on Napoleon
The Duke of Wellington had a great reluctance to write a history of any of his campaigns and battles, famously comparing them to the ‘history…

I've seen the quote "This is a man with whom I shall have to deal", attributed to Napoleon about Wellesley after the news of Assaye. I haven't seen it in the correspondence of that time that ive looked into, anyone know where it may be found, if there is concrete evidence?
