If you regard Hinton et al as “alarmist”, you’ll need even more inflated language to dismiss what Geoffrey Irving has said today.

Alignment problems and rogue agents forming a collective — these are not future issues. They are current issues.

And we really do need to consider hypothetical scenarios when trying to agree the restrictions necessary to avoid those scenarios.

I’m all for nuance, and for extended arguments. But “everyone just calm down” isn’t a very compelling argument. Time will tell if the concerns now being raised are acted on, or even well-founded.

I heard your eyerolls, for sure; and your rather blasé attitude to the concerns being raised by many AI experts, including Hinton. But I missed any serious arguments for being less worried about where this tech is going without necessary ethical and legal restrictions.

The King’s speech to Congress was remarkably political. He reminded them of their constitutional role in limiting executive power, called for Ukraine support, defended NATO, challenged isolationism, celebrated inter-faith relations, and urged action on the climate crisis.

US Catholic bishops seem to be directly engaging JD Vance here. Vance suggested that the pope was unaware of Catholic Just War Theory — thereby missing the pope’s point, namely, that the US/Israel attack on Iran, launched mid-negotiations, cannot satisfy the Just War criteria.

Make no bones about it, Orbán’s defeat in this election is also a defeat for both Trump and Putin. Magyar’s campaign focused on prosecuting the case that Orban’s administration was a corrupt grift, and overwhelmingly that appears to have won the day.

“But what a weak barrier is truth when it stands in the way of an hypothesis.” Mary Wollstonecraft, in A Vindication of the Rights of Woman (1792), argues that present realities cannot defeat the power of an imagined future — that revolutions begin with the imagination. #IWD26

OpenAI head of robotics just resigned over company deal with the Pentagon saying… “Surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got”
Caitlin KALINOWSKI over X

I resigned from OpenAl. I care deeply about the Robotics team and the work we built together.
This wasn't an easy call. Al has an important role in national security. But surveillance of Americans without judicial oversight and lethal autonomy without human authorization are lines that deserved more deliberation than they got. This was about principle, not people. I have deep respect for Sam and the team, and I'm proud of what we built together.

UK faces growing calls from locals to remove Cyprus military bases
Foreign minister, Constantinos Kombos, tells Guardian Iranian-made drone that hit airbase was launched from Lebanon Britain is facing growing calls to withdraw its military bases from Cyprus as locals step up protests against facilities seen as a threat to their security after an unprecedented drone attack on RAF Akrotiri. Anger over the installations spilled on to the streets of Nicosia, the capital, as protesters chanting “out with the bases of death” marched to the colonial-era presidential palace on Saturday amid fears of the Mediterranean nation being dragged into the wider Iran conflict. The NATO Paradox: its promise of collective defence for member states encouraged individual member states to neglect their own national security, believing that the NATO defensive umbrella was sufficient — and guaranteed. They assumed that the US was strategically immutable.
