I don't think the claim extended to which 2-3 days.

Old aeronautical rule of thumb: every extra 1Kg = 10kg extra to meet the same overall performance spec for range, payload. Heavier object needs heavier structure needs bigger engine needs more fuel... I see a pickup like this and see mostly an oversized, inefficient vehicle.

In terms of actual load carrying capacity, does the newer truck with massive external dimensions really do significantly more?

Large vehicles fit in large parking spaces. We're clearly in different countries, but using UK examples, garages and parking spaces from 50 years ago don't fit new cars; old car parks now fit fewer cars, new builds need larger car parks therefore more tarmac, concrete for the same number of customers

These things are clearly all related: a decent solution will aim to address several of these.

Smoo cave is run by Fraser these days, who is a lovely guy. He used to surf a lot..but I've not talked to him about surfing in years so unsure now. The scenery is great - if driving about, or cycling, go to just head where looks nice, stop where you fancy.

Definition of driveable distance tends to be greater in the Highlands...Smoo cave is massive, guided up on the N coast. If you head towards Elphin you can walk in from the road up the valley to see the Bone Caves which have nice views. Almost endless choices for hill days.

The place is empty where it's not already been built. If you want to keep it less built over, you need to be more efficient with space. Being more efficient with what's already built on is clearly also desirable.

It will for supporting infrastructure. There is a nice, direct link between vehicle mass, acceleration and range, which helps, but bigger cars need bigger car parks therefore more concrete/asphalt etc. If more people had what they realistically needed, not what they were marketed, we'd be better off

Partly because they use bigger wheels to look "good", so there's less internal space left. The Mini had a surprising amount of space in part due to small wheels. Modern fashion, not performance has been eroding this.

There have been many similar things before: taxes on engine size, emissions. I welcome the general idea so long as it's carefully crafted and works. Incentivising lighter, more efficient cars which need less infrastructure should be good. Moving away from over-sized wheels for aesthetic will help.

This is about more than damage to paved surfaces though. The amount of space in urban areas is finite and already difficult to manage. Steadily increasing sizes has meant older car parks and garages are no longer fit for purpose, new car parks fit fewer cars: we can address a lot of infra with size

The original Mini has safety standards typical of its era, but there's no need for concern with modern designs which are tested and certified. There is a common misconception that bigger cars are inherently safer which is at best unhelpful.

Interesting, because when I think of this film I think of it as a weak point in the Cohen Brothers canon, one which I really didn't find funny, but more like a cartoon. I much preferred the darker or more subtle humour of Miller's Crossing, Barton Fink and the Hudsucker Proxy from their early years.

It's a very good song, and nice video. As I've listened via CD and bandcamp I've been pretty ignorant of older videos until recently. Looking back at this one, I have a non-musical question: what made you get rid of your lip piercing? I don't have any, would be scared of ripping them out.

I don't expect to be reading things like this now. I would prefer this to be a relic from the 70s or 80s, and it's troubling that it's not.

I'm glad to see you write this as the debate is too easy to entrench in parallel arguments which never really meet, nor accept compromise. Simplistically, I'm in favour of assisted dying for the benefit of those suffering themselves, with reasonable mitigations made to avoid the coercion.

..and compounded today with the classic non-apology of apologising for any offence felt, not his own actions. Evidently another dinosaur, perhaps soon to be consigned to history. There are plenty of talented presenters who can take his place.

Yes, intrigued. I don't like Wham, but Last Christmas has nice connotations of school Christmas fairs.

It looks like you're starring in a new Tintin film. Be careful not to get knocked out by someone with a pistol or kosh.

Somehow, I don't find a box illustration which looks like Trump has just come into the contents is a strong selling point.

If we get to a stage where there is just a toilet, with an area for urinals for those who want them, an area with locking cubicles for those who want them, and a common area of sinks and hand drying, it'd be more efficient and cost effective than having different rooms and shouldn't exclude anyone.
