Resplendent Quetzal: Cloud Forest Icon of Central America
Resplendent quetzal, the name itself captures something essential about this bird. The male has tail feathers that extend up to a meter beyond his body, an iridescent green that shifts to blue and gold depending on the angle of light, a crimson chest, and a helmet of bristly green feathers on his head. He lives in the cloud forests of Central America, and for the Maya and Aztec civilizations he was the symbol of freedom, divinity, and the sky itself. Killing one was punishable by death. The feathers were more valuable than gold.

The Star-Nosed Mole Has 22 Tentacles on Its Face.. It Is the Fastest Eater Alive…
The star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata) is one of North America's most extraordinary mammals, living in the wet, marshy soils of the eastern continent. It is almost completely blind. What it has instead of useful eyes is a nose ringed by 22 pink, fleshy tentacles arranged in a star pattern, each covered in tiny sensory organs called Eimer's organs — more than 25,000 in total. That star is the most sensitive touch organ of any mammal ever studied. When a star-nosed mole is moving through its tunnel and its nose contacts a food item, the identification and consumption decision happens in under 8 milliseconds.

Binturongs Smell Exactly Like Buttered Popcorn..
The binturong is a large, shaggy, bear-like animal from the forests of Southeast Asia that is not a bear. It is a viverrid, related to civets and genets, and it smells unmistakably of freshly made buttered popcorn. Not vaguely. Not approximately. Exactly like buttered popcorn, strongly enough that zookeepers and wildlife researchers consistently describe it as one of the more pleasant-smelling large mammals they work with. The source of the smell is 2-acetyl-1-pyrroline, the same compound responsible for the aroma of popcorn and fresh bread. It is produced in the binturong's urine and deposited as the animal walks, with the tail and hindquarters dragging through the urine to spread the scent across branches and leaves.

The Mata Mata Turtle Looks Like a Pile of Dead Leaves. It Vacuums Fish Into Its Mouth..
There is a turtle in the rivers of the Amazon and Orinoco basins that is so thoroughly camouflaged as rotting vegetation that fish swim directly over it without reacting. The mata mata does not chase prey. It does not lunge. It simply opens its enormous mouth so rapidly that the resulting rush of water sucks the fish in before it has time to register what is happening. The whole strike takes less than a millisecond. The head is flat, triangular, and covered in flaps and ridges of skin that break up its outline and…

Sunfish Facts: Inside the Life of the Ocean’s Heaviest Bony Fish
The ocean sunfish is the heaviest bony fish on Earth, reaching weights of over 2,000 kilograms and lengths of 3 meters. Few fish look quite like it: the sunfish appears to be all head, a massive oval body with two tall fins, one on top and one on the bottom, that it uses to propel itself through the water with a slow, deliberate sculling motion. It cruises open ocean with a calm that suggests it has nothing to prove, and given its size, it probably doesn't. The sunfish's primary food is jellyfish, which are almost entirely water and have almost no nutritional value.

Proboscis Monkeys Have Noses Bigger Than Their Faces. The Bigger the Nose, the More Mates..
Proboscis monkeys live only in the coastal forests, mangroves, and riverine forests of Borneo, and the adult male is one of the most visually striking primates alive. His nose hangs down past his chin, fleshy and pendulous, and it grows larger as he ages. Females have smaller, upturned noses by comparison, and they favor males with the largest noses they can find, which has pushed male nose size to proportions that look, frankly, impractical. The nose is not just for show. It amplifies vocalizations, turning the male's warning calls and contact calls into louder, more resonant signals that carry further through dense forest.

Saiga Antelopes Have Noses Like Vacuum Cleaners… They Nearly Went Extinct Twice.
Saiga antelopes has one of the most distinctive faces in the mammal world. The nose is large, bulbous, and drooping, with downward-facing nostrils that give the animal an expression of permanent melancholy. It is not an aesthetic choice. That extraordinary proboscis is a sophisticated biological air-conditioning and filtration system: it warms and humidifies freezing steppe air in winter, protecting delicate lung tissue from the cold, and filters out the dense clouds of dust that the saiga's own hooves kick up during the mass migrations that were once one of the great wildlife spectacles of…

Okapi: The Secret Giraffe Cousin with Zebra Stripes
The okapi was unknown to Western science until 1901, which is remarkable for an animal the size of a horse. It lives in the dense Ituri rainforest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, and the forest hid it so effectively that despite local Mbuti pygmy people knowing it well for centuries, European naturalists heard only rumors and dismissed them as legend until a British explorer finally obtained a skin and sent it to London. The first scientists to examine the skin thought it was a new species of zebra. The striped hindquarters, the large ears, the general body shape, all pointed toward something equine.

Kakapos Are the World’s Heaviest Parrot. They Forgot How to Fly…
Kakapos are parrots that weigh up to 4 kilograms, smell strongly of honey and flowers, are completely flightless, and are almost certainly the strangest birds alive. They evolved in New Zealand in the absence of mammalian predators, and over millions of years did what many island birds do when there is nothing trying to eat them from the ground. They got bigger, lost the ability to fly, and became nocturnal. Then humans arrived with rats, stoats, and cats, and the kakapo had no idea what to do about any of them.

Numbats Eat Three Million Termites a Year. Nothing Else…
Numbats are the only marsupial that feeds exclusively on termites, and they have organized their entire existence around that single food source with a completeness that is either admirable or alarming depending on how you feel about dietary flexibility. The numbat is small, roughly the size of a squirrel, with a pointed snout, a long sticky tongue, and no functional teeth to speak of. It does not need teeth because it does not chew. Termites are swallowed whole, ground up in a muscular stomach that does the work teeth would otherwise do.

Mudskippers Walk on Land. They Also Breathe Through Their Skin….
Mudskippers are fish that have, to a remarkable degree, decided that water is optional. Mudskippers live in the intertidal mudflats and mangrove estuaries of Africa, South Asia, and the Indo-Pacific, and they spend the majority of their time out of water, moving across mud and climbing mangrove roots using their pectoral fins as crutches in a gait that is genuinely unlike anything else a fish does. The fins are muscular enough to support the body weight and flexible enough to function as limbs, and mudskippers move across mud with a speed and agility that surprises anyone watching for the first time.

Spiders Can Fly. Thousands of Kilometers.
Ballooning spiders are not a metaphor. Spiders genuinely fly, and they have been doing it for longer than humans have been watching the sky. How Spider Ballooning Works The behavior is called ballooning, and it works like this. A spider climbs to an exposed high point, a fence post, a blade of grass, the tip of a branch, raises its abdomen, and releases silk threads into the air. The threads catch atmospheric electric fields and air currents, and the spider lifts off. Small spiders have been collected by research…

Pufferfish Are Toxic Enough to Kill 30 Adults. They Still Get Eaten..
Pufferfish, specifically Takifugu rubripes and its relatives, contain tetrodotoxin, one of the most potent non-protein toxins known, concentrated in the liver, ovaries, skin, and intestines. A single pufferfish contains enough tetrodotoxin to kill 30 adult humans. There is no antidote. The toxin blocks sodium channels in nerve cell membranes, causing paralysis and respiratory failure within hours of ingestion. And yet in Japan, pufferfish, called fugu, has been a prized delicacy for centuries, prepared by licensed chefs who train for years specifically to remove the toxic organs without contaminating the flesh.

Gharials Have 110 Teeth. They Use None of Them for Chewing.
Gharial is one of the most distinctive crocodilians alive, and also one of the most endangered. The jaw is the first thing anyone notices. It is extraordinarily long and narrow, lined with 110 interlocking teeth that are perfectly designed for one thing and one thing only: catching fish. The teeth grip slippery prey sideways in the water with a lateral snap that is faster than any broad-jawed crocodilian can manage. Nothing gets chewed. Everything gets swallowed whole. The body tells the same story of specialization. The legs are weak compared to other crocodilians, barely capable of supporting the animal on land.

Potoos Bird: the Eerily Brilliant Bird That Vanishes Without Moving
Potoos bird is a nocturnal bird of Central and South America that has taken camouflage to a level that feels almost philosophical. During the day it perches on a broken tree stump or branch, closes its eyes, tilts its head upward, and becomes, to any predator passing beneath it, a piece of dead wood. The feather pattern matches bark so precisely that researchers studying the potoo bird in the field have walked past individuals perched at eye level without noticing them. How the Potoo Bird Disappears in Plain Sight The eyes are the detail that makes the potoo bird genuinely strange.

Northern hairy-nosed wombat: why it’s critically endangered
Most people know the common wombat, the round, solid, burrowing marsupial of southeastern Australia that has become something of a national mascot. Fewer know that a second species came within a handful of animals of disappearing from the Earth entirely without most of the world noticing. The northern hairy-nosed wombat is larger than its common relative, broader across the shoulders, with a distinctly wider snout covered in fine sensory hair that gives it heightened sensitivity for detecting the roots, grasses, and tubers it feeds on in the dark. Where the common wombat is a familiar presence across a wide range of habitats, the northern hairy-nosed wombat has always had a more precarious relationship with the landscape.

Draco Lizard: 6 Incredible Facts About the World’s Only Rib-Gliding Reptile
The draco lizard is a flying lizard of Southeast Asian rainforests that does not have wings. What this animal has is an extraordinary modification of its own skeleton. Five to seven elongated ribs extend outward from the body and are connected by a thin membrane of skin, forming a pair of gliding surfaces that fold flat against the body when not in use and spread wide for flight. It does not flap. It launches from a tree trunk, spreads its ribs, and glides up to 9 meters to the next tree, losing very little altitude in the process.

Thorny Devils Drink Through Their Skin..
The thorny devil of the Australian outback lives in one of the driest environments on Earth and has solved the water problem in a way that is genuinely unlike anything else in the vertebrate world. It drinks through its feet. The skin between the scales is covered in microscopic channels that draw water toward the mouth by capillary action, the same physical force that pulls water up through the narrow tubes of a paper towel. When a thorny devil stands in damp sand, or walks through morning dew on vegetation, water is drawn up through the channels across the entire body surface and transported to the corners of the mouth, where the lizard pumps it into its mouth by jaw movements.

Surinam Toads Give Birth Through Their Backs.
Pipa pipa is a fully aquatic frog from the rivers and flooded forests of South America, and its reproductive strategy is one of the more viscerally memorable in the vertebrate world. The female does not lay eggs in water or on leaves. The eggs are pressed into the soft skin of her back by the male during an elaborate underwater mating embrace, and the skin grows over them, encasing each egg in its own individual pocket. The young develop through the entire tadpole stage inside these pockets and emerge as fully formed froglets, pushing through the skin of their…

Snapping Turtles Can Bite Through a Broomstick..
The common snapping turtle, has a jaw that closes with enough force to sever a human finger cleanly and, in documented cases, to snap a wooden broomstick in half. The bite is not the fastest or the most powerful in the animal kingdom in absolute terms, but relative to body size and the speed of delivery, it is among the most dangerous of any freshwater animal in North America. The neck is the other feature worth knowing about. A snapping turtle can extend its neck to reach almost any point on its own shell, which is why picking one up from behind, the instinctive approach, is not as safe as it appears.

Velvet Worms Have Been Hunting the Same Way Since Before the Dinosaurs…
Peripatoides and their relatives are among the most ancient predators still alive, members of a lineage that has remained essentially unchanged for over 500 million years. They predate the colonization of land by vertebrates. They predate trees. They were hunting in the leaf litter of Cambrian forests before forests existed in any form we would recognize, and they are still doing it today in the humid forests of the Southern Hemisphere, using exactly the same method. The hunting method is the reason they have not needed to change. Velvet worms hunt by spraying slime.

The stoat, weighs between 100 and 400 grams depending on sex and season. It regularly kills European rabbits that weigh up to 2 kilograms, and it has been documented killing mountain hares weighing over 3 kilograms. The prey is often ten times the predator's body weight, and the stoat kills it with a single precise bite to the base of the skull. The technique is not brute force. It is anatomy. The stoat's skull is narrow enough to fit between the vertebrae at the back of a rabbit's skull, and the canine teeth are positioned to sever the spinal cord or brainstem in a single bite.

The eastern long-necked turtle of Australia has a neck so long it cannot retract its head into its shell the way most turtles do. Instead it folds the neck sideways along the body, tucking it under the rim of the shell, which is why it is also called a side-necked turtle. Lampreys Have Been Unchanged for 360 Million Years.
Before sharks. Before dinosaurs. Before the first forests had fully established themselves on land. The lamprey was already there, doing more or less exactly what it does today. Lampreys and its relatives are jawless fish, members of a lineage so ancient that they predate the evolution of jaws in vertebrates by tens of millions of years. The fossil record shows lamprey body plans essentially identical to modern forms dating back 360 million years, making them one of the most morphologically conservative vertebrates known. Whatever the lamprey is doing, it has been working well enough that evolution has seen no reason to substantially revise it.

Horned Lizards Shoot Blood From Their Eyes.
Phrynosoma species, the horned lizards of North America, have a defense mechanism that sits in a category of its own. When threatened by a canid predator, specifically coyotes, foxes, and domestic dogs, the lizard restricts blood flow leaving its head by constricting specific blood vessels, causing pressure to build in the ocular sinuses until the vessels burst and blood shoots from the corners of the eyes in a directed stream that can reach up to 1.5 meters. The blood contains chemical compounds derived from the lizard's diet of harvester ants that are specifically noxious to canids.

Archerfish Shoot Insects Out of Trees With Jets of Water.
Archerfish lives in the brackish mangrove estuaries of Southeast Asia and northern Australia, and it has solved the problem of reaching prey above the water surface in a way that no other fish has. It shoots them down. The archerfish positions itself below an insect perched on overhanging vegetation, adjusts for the refraction of light at the water surface, and fires a precisely aimed jet of water from its mouth by pressing its tongue against a groove in the roof of its mouth and snapping its gill covers shut. The jet can travel up to 3 meters with enough force to knock an insect off a branch, and the fish is already moving to intercept the falling prey before it hits the water.

There is exactly one venomous primate on Earth, and it has enormous round eyes, a teddy bear face, and raises its arms above its head when threatened in a gesture that looks, to most people, like it is asking for a hug. It is not asking for a hug. It is preparing to deliver a venomous bite. The slow loris produces venom by combining a secretion from a gland on its arm with saliva. When it raises its arms and licks the gland, it is mixing the two compounds in its mouth, charging the venom before biting.

This is not a joke. West Indian manatees store intestinal gas in a specialized hindgut and control their buoyancy by retaining or releasing it. A manatee that needs to dive holds the gas in. One that needs to rise releases it. The system functions as a biological ballast tank, and a constipated manatee is a manatee that cannot dive properly. The buoyancy control system is one adaptation among many that makes the manatee one of the more unusual large mammals in the ocean. The Paradoxical Frog Gets Smaller as It Grows Up.
Most animals grow larger as they mature, the paradoxical frog of South America, does the opposite. Its tadpole is one of the largest of any frog species, reaching up to 25 centimeters in length. The adult frog that emerges from metamorphosis is approximately 7 centimeters. The animal shrinks by two thirds during development. This reversal puzzled naturalists for centuries after the species was first described in 1768. The tadpole is so large relative to the adult that early collectors assumed they were looking at two different species. The explanation lies in the extreme demands of metamorphosis.

Secretary Birds Kick Snakes to Death.
Secretary is a bird of prey that hunts on foot. It stands 1.2 meters tall on long crane-like legs, walks up to 30 kilometers per day across African savanna, and kills venomous snakes by stomping on them with a strike force that has been measured at 195 Newtons, delivered in 15 milliseconds. The strike is too fast for the snake to respond to. By the time the venom apparatus can engage, the bird has already lifted its foot and struck again. The legs are the weapon. The feathers on the lower legs provide some protection against bites, but the primary defense is speed.

Ospreys Dive Feet-First Into Water at 130km/h.
Most birds of prey strike from above with their talons. The osprey, Pandion haliaetus, takes this further than any other raptor. It folds its wings and plunges completely underwater, feet first, at speeds up to 130 kilometers per hour, disappearing beneath the surface and emerging with a fish gripped in talons that have a reversible outer toe allowing it to hold prey with two toes in front and two behind, a grip configuration found in no other raptor. The dive is preceded by a hover, sometimes lasting several minutes, during which the osprey adjusts its position to account for the refraction of light at the water surface, which displaces the apparent position of the fish from its actual position.

When threatened, a hagfish releases a small amount of mucus and protein threads from glands along its body. On contact with seawater, this mixture expands into a dense, fibrous slime that can fill a bucket in seconds from a teaspoon of raw material. The slime is not just unpleasant. It is mechanically sophisticated.

Moose Are Bigger Than You Think. And Faster.
Most people who have not stood next to a moose have a fundamentally incorrect mental image of the animal. Alces alces is the largest member of the deer family, with adult males reaching up to 2.1 meters at the shoulder and weighing up to 700 kilograms. The antlers alone can span 1.8 meters and weigh 20 kilograms. A moose is not a large deer. It is closer in scale to a horse, and it moves with a speed that its bulk does not suggest. A moose can run at 56 kilometers per hour over short distances and maintain 32 kilometers per hour for extended periods.

Bowerbirds Build Art. Females Grade It.
The male great bowerbird, Chlamydera nuchalis, does not have bright plumage. It does not have an elaborate tail. What it has is a construction project, and the standards it is held to by the females that inspect its work are, by any measure, remarkable. The bower is a structure of sticks built on the ground, forming an avenue that the male decorates with objects collected from the surrounding environment. Bones, shells, stones, berries, glass fragments, plastic bottle caps, anything pale or brightly colored gets incorporated into the display. The male arranges these objects in a specific spatial pattern, with larger objects placed farther from the bower entrance and smaller objects closer, creating a forced perspective illusion that makes the bower interior appear larger than it is when viewed from the female's position at the entrance.

Whale Sharks Are the Size of a Bus. They Eat Like a Sieve.
Rhincodon typus is the largest fish on Earth, reaching lengths of up to 18 meters and weights of up to 19,000 kilograms. It is also a filter feeder, consuming plankton, fish eggs, and small fish by swimming slowly through concentrations of food with its mouth open, filtering thousands of liters of water per hour through gill rakers that strain out anything edible. The contrast between the scale of the animal and the scale of its food is one of the more striking facts in marine biology. The largest fish alive eats some of the smallest organisms in the ocean, and it does so with a mouth up to 1.5 meters wide that opens to reveal not the teeth of a predator but a filtering apparatus of extraordinary efficiency.

Jumping Spiders Have Better Vision Than a Cat.
For an animal with a brain the size of a poppy seed, Salticidae family spiders have solved the problem of vision in a way that puts most larger animals to shame. Jumping spiders have eight eyes arranged around their cephalothorax, but the two large forward-facing principal eyes are the ones that matter most, and they are extraordinary. The principal eyes have a narrow field of view, approximately 2 to 3 degrees, but within that field they resolve detail at a level that exceeds the visual acuity of a cat and approaches that of a human, despite the spider's entire body being smaller than a fingernail.

Cuttlefish Can Hypnotize Prey With Flickering Light.
Sepia officinalis is not a fish. It is a cephalopod, more closely related to octopuses and squid than to anything with a backbone, and it may be the most visually sophisticated animal in the ocean. The skin contains up to 10 million chromatophores, iridophores, and papillae per square centimeter, controlled by the nervous system with a precision that allows the cuttlefish to produce moving patterns across its entire body surface simultaneously. The hunting behavior that uses this system most dramatically is called the passing cloud display. When a cuttlefish approaches prey, typically a crab or shrimp, it produces a rippling wave of dark and light bands that travels continuously across its body from front to back.

Tasmanian Devils Scream. The Sound Carries a Kilometer.
The name was given by European settlers who heard the sounds coming from the darkness and could not identify the source. Screaming, coughing, growling, and a low-pitched devil-like shriek that carries across a kilometer of Tasmanian bush at night. When they finally saw the animal producing it, a black, dog-sized marsupial with a disproportionately large head, the name had already stuck. Sarcophilus harrisii, the Tasmanian devil, is the largest carnivorous marsupial alive. It became the largest after the thylacine, the Tasmanian tiger, was hunted to extinction in 1936. The devil's jaw produces the highest bite force relative to body size of any living mammal, strong enough to crush bone completely.

Barn Owls Hear Better Than Any Animal Ever Tested.
A barn owl can locate a mouse moving under 30 centimeters of snow in complete darkness, guided entirely by sound. No vision. No thermal sensing. Just ears and a face shaped like a satellite dish. Tyto alba has asymmetrical ear openings, one higher than the other on the skull, which allows it to detect the vertical position of a sound source as well as its horizontal position. Most animals with two ears can locate sounds horizontally by comparing the time difference between when the sound reaches each ear. The barn owl's asymmetrical ears add a second axis, giving it three-dimensional sound location with a precision that has been measured in laboratory conditions and found to be accurate to within one degree in both the horizontal and vertical planes.

Naked Mole Rats Don’t Get Cancer. Scientists Want to Know Why.
Heterocephalus glaber breaks most of the rules that apply to mammals. It is cold-blooded, which mammals are not supposed to be. It lives in a eusocial colony with a single breeding queen, a system found in insects but almost nowhere else in mammals. It feels no pain from acid or capsaicin. It can survive 18 minutes without oxygen by switching its metabolism to fructose, a trick no other mammal can perform. And it does not get cancer. In over 40 years of keeping naked mole rats in captivity, researchers have documented fewer than a handful of cancer cases across thousands of individuals.

Glass Frogs Have Transparent Skin. You Can Watch Their Hearts Beat.
The glass frogs of the family Centrolenidae are small, mostly nocturnal, and live in the cloud forests and rainforests of Central and South America. From above, they look like ordinary green tree frogs. Turn one over and the illusion collapses entirely. The ventral skin is transparent. The heart, liver, and digestive tract are visible through the skin, functioning in plain sight. The heart is red and visibly pulsing. The liver is white. The intestines are coiled and visible in detail. In gravid females, the eggs are visible as a cluster of spheres inside the body cavity.

Shoebills Stand Still for Hours. Then Strike Faster Than a Cobra.
There is a bird in the papyrus swamps of central Africa that looks like it was designed by a committee that could not agree on what a bird should look like. The shoebill, Balaeniceps rex, stands up to 1.5 meters tall, has a wingspan approaching 2.5 meters, and carries a bill shaped like a Dutch clog that is approximately 23 centimeters long and 10 centimeters wide. It is one of the most prehistoric-looking birds alive, and it behaves in a way that matches the appearance. The shoebill hunts by standing completely motionless in shallow water for periods that can extend to several hours, waiting for a lungfish, catfish, or water snake to move within range.

Sun Bears Eat With Their Tongues. 25cm of Them.
The sun bear, Helarctos malayanus, is the smallest bear on Earth and almost certainly the least famous. It lives in the lowland tropical forests of Southeast Asia, weighs between 25 and 65 kilograms, and has a tongue that extends up to 25 centimeters from its mouth. That tongue is the central tool of its existence. Sun bears eat honey, bee larvae, termites, and beetle grubs extracted from inside trees and underground nests. The tongue reaches places no other bear's tongue can reach, probing deep into termite mounds, bee nests, and rotting wood to extract food that other animals cannot access.

The Lyrebird Learned to Imitate a Chainsaw.
Menura novaehollandiae, the superb lyrebird of southeastern Australia, is the most accomplished vocal mimic in the animal kingdom. This is not a casual claim. The lyrebird can reproduce the calls of over 20 other bird species with accuracy sufficient to fool the birds being imitated. It can replicate the sounds of camera shutters, car alarms, crying babies, and construction equipment. One individual recorded in the 1990s in the Sherbrooke Forest near Melbourne had incorporated the sound of a chainsaw into its display repertoire, a sound it could only have learned from the logging operations that were reducing the forest around it.

Fossa: Madagascar’s Top Predator Looks Like a Cat But Is Closer to a Mongoose.
Madagascar separated from the African mainland approximately 160 million years ago, and the animals that arrived on the island afterward, carried by ocean currents on floating vegetation, found a world with no large predators and no competition from the mammal groups that were diversifying across the rest of the world. What evolved in their place is unlike anything found anywhere else on Earth. The fossa, Cryptoprocta ferox, is the largest carnivore native to Madagascar, reaching up to 80 centimeters in body length with a tail of equal length, and weighing up to 12 kilograms.

Fireflies Synchronize Their Flashes. Thousands of Them. Simultaneously.
In the forests of the Great Smoky Mountains in Tennessee, for approximately two weeks each June, thousands of male fireflies of the species Photinus carolinus flash in synchrony. The flashes begin scattered and random, then gradually align until the entire forest pulses with light in unison, dark for several seconds, then bright, then dark again, in a rhythm that can be seen from hundreds of meters away. This is not a coincidence or an optical illusion. It is coordinated behavior, and understanding how it works has occupied researchers in mathematics, physics, and biology for decades.

Mimic Octopuses Impersonate Other Animals.. They Choose Which One Based on the Threat.
The mimic octopus, Thaumoctopus mimicus, was not described by science until 1998, despite living in the shallow coastal waters of the Indo-Pacific where divers had been working for decades. The reason it went unnoticed for so long is the same reason it survives. It looks like something else. Researcher Mark Norman at Museum Victoria in Melbourne was the first to document the mimic octopus systematically, publishing observations of an octopus that was not simply changing color to match its background but actively impersonating the body shapes, movements, and behaviors of other specific animals.

Pangolins Are the Most Trafficked Mammal on Earth! Most People Have Never Heard of Them.
There are eight species of pangolin. Four live in Africa. Four live in Asia. All eight are threatened with extinction. The Chinese pangolin, Manis pentadactyla, is Critically Endangered. The Sunda pangolin, Manis javanica, is Critically Endangered. The Philippine pangolin, Manis culionensis, is Critically Endangered. The Indian pangolin, Manis crassicaudata, is Endangered. The four African species are Vulnerable. Every year, tens of thousands of pangolins are seized by law enforcement in trafficking operations across Asia and Africa. These seizures represent a fraction of the actual trade. Researcher Daniel Challender at the University of Oxford has studied pangolin trafficking networks in detail, estimating that over one million pangolins were trafficked in the decade between 2000 and 2013, making pangolins the most heavily trafficked wild mammal on Earth by volume.

Sloths Move So Slowly That Algae Grows in Their Fur, The Algae Feeds Them Back.
The three-toed sloth, Bradypus variegatus, moves at an average speed of approximately 0.24 kilometers per hour. This is not laziness. It is one of the most precisely calibrated energy conservation strategies in the mammal world, and it works so well that sloths have been using it largely unchanged for millions of years. Sloths move so slowly that algae colonizes their fur. Then they eat the algae. Here is the self-sustaining ecosystem living on the world's slowest mammal. The sloth's diet consists almost entirely of leaves. Leaves are low in calories, high in toxins, and difficult to digest.

Bombardier Beetles Spray Boiling Chemicals From Their Abdomen. Twice Per Second.
The bombardier beetle does not bluff. When threatened, Brachinus species and their relatives in the tribe Brachinini produce a spray of boiling liquid from their abdomen at approximately 100 degrees Celsius, directed with precision at the source of the threat, at a rate of up to 500 pulses per second. The chemistry is genuinely remarkable. The beetle maintains two separate chambers in its abdomen. One contains hydroquinones and hydrogen peroxide. The other contains enzymes including catalase and peroxidase. When threatened, the beetle forces the contents of the first chamber into the second.
