Here we go again. The USDA is now proposing a reorganization that would shut down Montana’s public land offices. These jobs, research, and decision-making roles would be relocated to places like Salt Lake City and Fort Collins—far from the lands they affect.

Congress passed the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Montana’s whole delegation voted for it. It was signed into law by Pres. Trump on July 4th. So let’s catch up.

The Reconciliation Bill Passed. What Happens Now?
Even without sell-offs, the new law lays the groundwork for giving away 200 million acres to oil and gas companies and billionaires.

Congress just handed control of 200 million acres to oil and gas corporations. Gutting oversight, slashing royalties, and selling out Montana’s economy, communities, and outdoor heritage. This isn’t energy policy. It’s theft from the American people.

Last night, House lawmakers removed bill language that would have sold over 500,000 acres of public land. This is a big win. We thank Rep. Ryan Zinke for his leadership in getting this amendment removed.

“We’re seeing monumental shifts not only in norms of governance but actions that might seem like small potatoes when you consider them individually, but they add up to a seismic reconsideration of the public value of our public land.”
