This leaf, with its gradient of green, yellow, and brown colors, reminded me of the transitions that happen in nature, and in life in general. 💚💛🤎

Mindfulness allows us to notice our perceptions, feelings, and thoughts without judgement or attachment. With this skill, we aren't consumed by our thoughts or feelings, and can act calmly and intentionally. 💜
“Just as flowers and leaves are only part of a plant, and just as waves are only part of the ocean, perceptions, feelings, and thoughts are only part of the self.” Thich Nhat Hanh, The Sun My Heart

A quiet, mindful moment with a turtle 💜 I spotted this woodland friend while on a walk and took a moment to sit and mindfully observe. Not touching or disturbing them in any way – just looking and appreciating the moment. #mindfulness #nature

Sometimes nature can be hard to access. This can happen for many reasons, such as illness or mobility issues, or dangerous weather conditions. The good news is, there are ways you can bring nature closer to you, even when access to the outdoors is limited. See how ⤵️ wildkept.com/2024/08/22/b...

When you practice #mindfulness, you focus your awareness on the present experience, using your senses to ground yourself in the current moment. This not only brings us back to our body, it also helps us feel connected to the world around us on a deeper, more visceral level. #nature #wellness

Mindful Walking and Mindful Contemplation often go hand in hand! Here I paused my mindful walking and shifted to a mindful contemplation practice when a butterfly drew my interest. The common thread is centering awareness in the present moment – and being open to all it has to offer. 💜

Cultivating mindfulness not only benefits our own well-being, it also helps others. When we're able to focus our attention, regulate our emotions, and recognize our internal states and feelings, we can become more perceptive and connected to individuals, community, and the world around us.
Thich Nhat Hanh said, “The most precious gift we can offer others is our presence. When mindfulness embraces those we love, they will bloom like flowers.”

Have you heard of the ‘20-5-3 Rule’? Developed by neuroscientist Rachel Hopman, it suggests: 🌿 20 minutes 3 times a week in the type of nature you can find in a city park. 🌿 5 hours a month in wilder nature, like a state park. 🌿 3 days a year in the backcountry.

Sometimes we live life on autopilot – acting out of habit or routine without conscious awareness or active thought. Practicing mindfulness helps us become more aware of the present moment. It can help us appreciate the beauty in life.

In his book, “Emotional Chaos to Clarity”, Phillip Moffitt shares “During the mindfulness process, you do not judge, compare, or try to fix your emotions or mind states. Instead you learn to be fully present to whatever you are experiencing, with a calm, nonjudgmental mind and an open heart.”
Phillip Moffitt, Buddhist meditation teacher and writer, said “The great benefit of practicing mindfulness … is presence of mind within a storm of emotions.”

Along with mindful sitting and mindful walking, mindful nature contemplation is one of the three foundational nature activities to cultivate mindfulness. It allows you to experience the present moment, just as it is, without judgement. It helps us notice nature, and see things just as they are.

Start where you are, as you are. We can withhold judgment, accept ourselves as we are, and decide to act on our values now, even if we feel we’ve failed in the past. If you value spending time in nature and practicing mindfulness, this is a new moment. You can do it today.

As you make a practice of going out into nature and mindfully observing, you’ll become more aware of how things change. A tree that appeared barren in the winter grows new leaves in the spring. As the days get warmer and brighter, berries appear. Take time to be in the present moment, just as it is.

You don’t have to wait for conditions to be perfect. You can start right now. 🌱 It may be tempting to visit nature only when it’s nice out, or when you’re in a good mood. Try practicing #mindfulness outside of these moments to help expand your awareness, and build your flexibility and resilience.

Mindful walking in nature means walking outdoors, while being aware of each step and the present moment. You’re not thinking about your to-do lists, planning for the future, or worrying about the past. You’re simply walking at your own pace, aware of your body’s moment, and your current experience.
From Thich Nhat Hanh's How to Walk: “Every step is a revolution against busyness. Each mindful step says: “I don’t want to run anymore. I want to stop. I want to live my life. I don’t want to miss the wonders of life.” When you can truly arrive, there is peace in you because you aren’t struggling anymore. Each footprint has peace in it, it has the mark “here and now” in it. You may enjoy arriving and feeling at home for three, four, five, or ten minutes, as long as you like. One hour of practice already begins the revolution.”
