John of John is speculative: taking place in a made-up landscape. And re Mongo, memorists/autofictionists are presented with the fraught choice of whether to be true the internal/remembered landscape or to consult Google maps before writing any sentence. It's a tough choice! (Ask me how I know).

I didn't read Young Mungo because YA brings out the worst of cis gay men's tendencies. But John of John was exquisitely written in most respects: except that I couldn't make any of the emotional leaps. Would anybody do that, react that way, stay and endure in the situation as presented? Nah.
