It depends on what you use it for. Keep in mind that all this is powered by donor money. The more commercial and the more large scale your use is the more we'd like you to either use your own copy or look at Wikimedia Enterprise APIs.

🤖 The Wikimedia Foundation reports over half its traffic now comes from bots — raising the challenge of keeping knowledge open while protecting infrastructure from unsustainable automated load.

Wikidata @wikidatacommunity.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
🔎 For many factual questions, querying structured data (like Wikidata) is cheaper, more efficient, and easier to verify.

Wikidata @wikidatacommunity.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
🔗 GLAMs should host their own data on a Wikibase instance, not just Wikidata — Wikidata is a secondary/tertiary knowledge graph referencing existing sources, not an authority for original publication.
100
Wikidata @wikidatacommunity.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
📈 Uploading a dataset to Wikidata doesn't make it valuable on its own — it needs people to add references, update info, improve quality, and connect it to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons.
100
Wikidata @wikidatacommunity.bsky.social · 04/08/2026
🏛️ Many GLAM/memory institutions support open access for humans but are increasingly cautious about unrestricted AI use — citing lost attribution, missing context, and lack of reciprocity.
