Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” Slowed Down to 33 RPM Sounds Great and Takes on New, Unexpected Meanings (RIP)
Note: We were sad to see the news that Dolly Parton passed away. Today we are bringing back one of our favorite Dolly Parton posts. She will be missed. The Walrus is… Dolly Parton?

“The Trouble with Heroes” by Kate Messner Accidentally starting reading this right before heading to the Adirondacks. A 13-year-old attempts to make amends by climbing all of the Adirondack’s 46 high peaks in 1 summer. Amazing, heartbreaking… Read. This. Book. Now.

Libraries make us a harder target for authoritarianism. Equal access to info, ideas, and space that doesn’t require a purchase to belong. Also: using the library means money stays in your community instead of streaming out to Amazon. 📚 What’s checked out on your card right now?

When books don’t circulate, they’re “weeded” from the collection and donated to a Friends-of-the-Library nonprofit to sell at a book sale. The funds are then donated back to the library. I adopted this copy of “Bunnicula” today. Absolutely love this book. Hope it’s happy at its new home.

If you’re looking for a nice cozy, heart-warming (iyashikei) watch, I’d recommend “Bartender: Glass of God”. Ryū Sasakura, a bartending genius, mixes drinks to heal his customers’ souls.

I’ve read and own almost the entirety of 20+ volumes of “20th Century Boys” by Naoki Urasawa. A group of childhood friends attempt to stop a cult leader from destroying the world. A bit of a mystery box thirst trap, the art and story will keep you coming back for more. Highly recommend, 4/5

I recently watched and then read “Reading Lolita in Tehran”. It recounts Azar Nafisi’s life and subversive book club in the Islamic Republic of Iran. While the movie is very good, I’m not sure it does the scope of book justice. Regardless, both highly recommended.

I finished “Iron Curtain: the Crushing of Eastern Europe” by Anne Applebaum this week. It describes how the Soviet Union exploited the chaos and desperation after WWII to systematically/cruelly takeover Eastern Europe. Highly recommended. And sadly a stark warning for today’s world.
