We are surrounded by wicked problems - problems with no answer and no stopping point. In schools worldwide, students still focus on getting the "right" answer. How will future generations survive unless they learn wicked thinking?

Wicked Problem: Designer Babies - Using artificial biological intelligence, doctors can manipulate a baby's genetic material to produce desired traits, such as blue eyes and blonde hair. In the future, they may also be able to increase a baby's intelligence.

Wicked Problem: Ocean Plastic Waste - Ocean plastic waste harms marine life through entanglement, ingestion, and toxic contamination. It impacts thousands of species, from plankton to massive whales, altering their ability to feed, grow, and reproduce.

Wicked Problem: Fresh Produce - As pressure on aquifers to supply water to tech companies increases, farmers may ultimately lack the resources to produce the food we eat.

Wicked Problem: Wet-Bulb Temperature - This combines heat and humidity to indicate how effectively our bodies can cool themselves. Sweat evaporating from our skin is enough to keep us at a safe temperature. When humidity is high, sweat stops evaporating. Without cooling, the human body shuts down.

Wicked Problem: Heat and Geriatric Populations - Extreme heat poses severe health risks to older adults, who are vulnerable to dehydration, heatstroke, and cardiovascular stress. Fans blow hot air. At ambient temperatures above 42 °C, your body can no longer cool itself, so the fan has no effect.

Wicked Problem: Warehousing - This refers to the unethical institutionalization of elderly or frail adults in facilities that prioritize cost-efficient, mass management over quality of life. You think you're sending Grandpa to a comfortable environment, but instead, he gets "WAREHOUSED."

Wicked Problem: Synthetic Meat (SMEAT) - Cultured, or lab-grown, meat. Bioreactors use cell samples grown similarly to bacteria. SMEAT offers a potentially sustainable, humane alternative to traditional meat. While Bio-Meats help the environment, farmers would lose income if it became mainstream.

Wicked Problem: Tornadoes and Cyclones - Large swaths of the United States now face year-round threats from these extreme weather monsters.

Wicked Problem: Sea Level Rise - Populations will need to adapt to rising seas, either by moving inland or by building above sea level.

Wicked Problem: Climate Refugees - What happens when countries are overwhelmed by people seeking food and shelter from rising seas, drought, or climate wars? If history has its say, they will be treated as an enemy and locked up to keep the locals "safe" from the incoming threat.

Wicked Problem: Synthetic Biology – Dr. Tara Norman couldn’t understand why standard treatments didn’t address the patient’s bacterial infection, which was killing him. The lab workup revealed that this was no ordinary bug. This bacterium was engineered. Tara sealed the room and alerted the CDC.

Wicked Problem: Microplastics - On average, we consume between 5 grams of plastic a year and as much as 5 grams a week. How much is five grams? Think of it as eating a credit card. All of it. Up to once a week, every week. Until you die.

Wicked Problem: AI and Robots - What type of world will come about when we combine these two techniques?

Wicked Problem: Heat Spikes - Captain Billings came across the remains of people killed during the last heat wave. Air support radioed to see if they needed a pickup. Private Smith replied that there wasn't much left after the birds got to them.

Wicked Problem: Climate Wars - Private Muller recons an abandoned village after a recent battle over the control of a nearby water reservoir. His T400 robo-mutt scans for signs of life. "So much death and destruction for a glass of water," the soldier remarks.

Wicked Problem: Wildfires - With a changing climate come floods, typhoons, and droughts. Prolonged droughts create conditions that make wildfires more likely. Some wildfires move so fast that they leave no time to escape.

Wicked Problem: Infectious Diseases - Climate change is allowing mosquitoes to move to higher latitudes. They bring the diseases they carry to vulnerable populations.

Wicked Problem: Fresh Water - Black gold isn't what these explorers are looking for. With pollution, drought, and climate shifts, fresh water will be tomorrow's liquid gold.

Wicked Problem: Extreme Weather Mitigation - How will we mitigate the destructive power of super typhoons? Tropical storms can dump vast amounts of rain, triggering dam collapses and mudslides that destroy entire cities. Extreme weather is a national wicked problem.

Wicked Problem: Disaster Damage - When fires, typhoons, or flooding strike an individual or an entire community, they leave mental scars that take years to heal. Even if a home or town can be rebuilt, community stability may never return to its pre-catastrophe levels.

A Wicked Future @wickedfuture.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Wicked Problem: Storm Erosion - As civilization emits more heat-trapping gases into the atmosphere, ocean storms become more destructive. As a result, communities must build more costly defenses or abandon their homes to the sea.

A Wicked Future @wickedfuture.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Wicked Problem: Pandemic - A pandemic is an outbreak of an infectious disease that shows a sudden increase in cases and spreads over a large area, such as multiple continents or worldwide, affecting a significant number of individuals.

Wicked Problem: Homelessness. It may be due to rising water levels, drought, or violent conflict. All the causes have one thing in common: a changing planet.

Wicked Problem: Water Overuse - Throughout the world, rivers are drying up as water is diverted for other uses. Factories, large-scale agriculture, and municipal purposes use vast quantities of water, leaving rural farmers and villages with little to no flowing water.

Wicked Problem: Urban Waste - As temperatures rise, how will urban environments manage the large volumes of waste cities produce?

A Wicked Future @wickedfuture.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Wicked Problem: Ratmageddon - Rats scavenge in sewers and bins and can pass on serious diseases to humans. They can also contaminate food supplies. Climate change can affect their breeding by allowing more litters in warmer weather. Hantavirus and leptospirosis are diseases associated with rodents.

A Wicked Future @wickedfuture.bsky.social · 25/09/2026
Wicked Problem: Urban heat islands (UHI) make cities significantly hotter than surrounding rural areas—often by 4–6 °C—by trapping heat in concrete and asphalt. This effect elevates energy demand for cooling, worsens air pollution, and increases heat-related health risks.

Wicked Problem: Surveillance - As AI becomes more powerful, people will find themselves living in a system that tracks their movements through facial Recognition. If an individual writes something the government dislikes, they can be taken into custody for questioning.

By 2050, areas approaching human survivability limits (where heat and humidity cross the 35 °C wet-bulb threshold) include parts of South Asia, the Persian Gulf, and the Red Sea region. In these places, the human body cannot cool itself through sweating, making outdoor activity deadly.

Wicked Problem: Prison Inmates - Global data from organizations like the UNODC indicate that out of roughly 11.5 to 11.7 million incarcerated people worldwide, approximately 10.5 million are men. This constitutes roughly 91% of total prisoners.
