Founded in 1868 at the confluence of the Little Arkansas and Arkansas rivers, the frontier outpost of Wichita quickly became a trailhead for Texas cattlemen and their herds of longhorns when the AT&SF Railroad arrived in 1872. Early Wichita had 14 saloons.

The "Dennis the Menace" comics are set in a middle-class neighborhood in Wichita, Kansas. The Mitchell family live in a two-story home at the fictional address of 2251 Pine Street. The Wilson family live next door, at 2253 Pine St. The TV series differs, with the Wilsons at 627 Elm Street. #Wichita

Wichita’s Union Station (@ 701 East Douglas Avenue) is a historic Beaux-Arts landmark that opened in 1914 and served as the city’s central passenger rail hub for 65 years. One million tickets were sold in 1920 alone. Notable visitors included Eleanor and Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1936. #Wichitawesome

Main Street, Mid-1870s Wichita, on the east bank of the Arkansas River, officially incorporated in 1870. Among the signatories on the town charter was a lone woman, town laundry operator, Catherine "The Widow" McCarty. Her elder teenage son, after leaving #Wichita, became the gunman, Billy the Kid.

"Law of the Pampas" (1939) is a American Western film starring Wichita's, Sidney Toler, in a rare comedic turn. Toler is best known for his role as the Oriental detective, Charlie Chan. This movie blends crime and cowboy justice with a cross-border twist. Sidney's fierce in an big ol' barroom brawl.

Sidney performed there.

As Mammy, the maid of Scarlett O'Hara in "Gone With the Wind", Hattie McDaniel won the 1940 Academy Award, becoming the first minority actor to win an Oscar. All of the film's black actors, including Hattie, were barred from attending the film's premiere in 1939, in Atlanta. #Juneteenth #FreeAtLast

Wichitan, Louise Brooks stars in the silent comedy, "Love 'Em and Leave 'Em", a tale of two sisters with the older one pledged to look after the younger one (Brooks). It was a dark and stormy night of May 16, 1872, that a Wichita & Southwestern train first came to Wichita. The local paper did not photograph the event, but a later picture showed the train arriving in town. "All is joy," wrote Marshall Murdock, editor of The Wichita City Eagle, in Friday's edition.

Catherine, mother of Billy the Kid, lived in #Wichita, #Kansas from 1870 to 1871. Catherine purchased real estate and established a laundry business, while her husband, William, farmed in a cabin outside of town. Catherine was the only woman to sign Wichita's incorporation papers. #WichitaHistory

Cursive reads: Texas Cattle Fording Arkansas River at Wichita, Kansas, July 1869, property of J R Mead The Chisholm Trail was a key to the cattle industry during the late 19th century for ranches in Texas to railheads in Wichita. The trail was named after Jesse Chisholm, a Scottish-Cherokee trader.

The Wichita Town Company was organized by Governor S. J. Crawford, W. W. H. Lawrence, J. R. Mead, E. P. Bancroft, A. F. Horner, and I. S. Munger.
