Sensational headlines sell clicks, but they rarely tell the whole story... Health news often pulls out dramatic numbers to drive shares, leaving out the essential context you need to evaluate what the data actually means.

Science can be complicated... and navigating health news online isn't always easy 😥 Misleading headlines or misinformation about health isn't just frustrating - it exaggerates risks, distorts findings, and makes it harder to figure out what the research actually tells us.

Advertisers will also tie alcohol advertisements to special days (International Women's Day, Mother's Day). Celebrity alcohol brands further blur the line between advertising a product and a lifestyle!

Women's Health Research Cluster @whrcluster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Dr. Emslie also researches alcohol marketing. Why? Because advertisers KNOW that what and how you drink is linked to your identity. So they will strategically show how alcohol can align with or enhance your identity, friendships, relationships 👀

Women's Health Research Cluster @whrcluster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
In another focus group, Dr. Emslie found that the appearance and drink are important for LGBTQ+ people to signal "who they are" to friends and others in their surroundings. ⭐ The big takeaway is that alcohol consumption is intricately interwoven with one's identity! ⭐

Women's Health Research Cluster @whrcluster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
LGBTQ+ people are more likely to drink, drink excessively, and experience-alcohol related problems than heterosexual or cisgender people. Some of the reasons may be related to coping with discrimination, marginalization, and stigma. There are also extra barriers for LGBTQ+ people to seek support.
100
Women's Health Research Cluster @whrcluster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Dr. Emslie conducted focus groups with women in their 30s and 40s. They asked questions like "what do you like to drink?" and "does that show us who you are?". They found that it depends on the context 👉 the time/place, what you're wearing, who you're with, and what your drinking out of!

So.. do alcohol policies (to increase price, reduce availability, restrict marketing) affect men and women differently? Turns out there is very little work that looked into this!

Women's Health Research Cluster @whrcluster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
There are also gender differences in consumption over time and between cultures... as well as different gendered stereotypes associated with drinking! So.. do alcohol policies (to increase price, reduce availability, restrict marketing) affect men and women differently?

Women's Health Research Cluster @whrcluster.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Although men are more likely to drink alcohol than women, there is an increase in women's drinking & associated harm in many countries - there was a 35% increase in deaths from excessive drinking in women in 2020/21 (Esser et al 2024). Women also suffer greater harm at lower levels of consumption.

Two Years Later: Canada Still Lacks a Coordinated Strategy for #WomensHealth #Part2 The result is predictable. Women are more likely to be misdiagnosed, under‑treated, and have their needs overlooked across the lifespan.
