The LAPD has shrunk to its size in 2003 & homicides are....down to levels unseen since the 1950s. Most other types of crime have gone down too. Why don't our electeds raise the obvious possibility that LA is bankrupting itself to feed a police force that is too: big, violent, & lawsuit prone?

Mayor Bass aims to keep LAPD from shrinking. As for growth: 'We are not there now'
Facing a budget crunch and election challenges, Mayor Karen Bass told The Times that her goal of restoring police department to past staffing levels will be difficult in near term.

UPDATE: The LAPD officer at the center of this story -- Vincent Deglinnocenti -- is no longer an LAPD officer. Last month he surrendered his license to be a cop in CA. This comes a year after my reporting pushed the LAPD to investigate Deglinnocenti for pulling a gun on a teen. @lataco.bsky.social

Congrats to @aclusocal.bsky.social for winning a judgement against Inglewood PD's regime to systematically hide and even destroy cop disciplinary records! LAPD of course behaves the same, with utter disdain for the law: destroying records subject to release, delaying releases, etc etc.

Back in 2017, Netpol offered the first British review of Alex's book "The End of Policing" and in 2018 hosted a launch at Conway Hall in London. Oh, to have been a fly on the wall when New York's Police Benevolent Association heard about his appointment... netpol.org/2017/09/18/t...
In reality, however, the “thin blue line” remains much as it has always been – less the divide between the criminals and the law-abiding, but more between the haves and the have-nots. What “The End of Policing” asks us to imagine is a society where the police are no longer viewed in these terms – or indeed, when tackling many of the problems that society faces, are no longer seen as part of the solution at all.

US police are allowed to do things to American citizens which would be considered war crimes if a soldier did them to civilians in a war zone. This includes the use of chemical weapons like tear gas. This includes the use of torture methods like solitary confinement. This includes murder.
