#OnThisDay in 1866, a peaceful Black voting rights convention in New Orleans was brutally massacred by a white mob. Nearly 50 people were killed. This tragedy fueled the fight for the 14th Amendment.

🚍 1953: Despite 80% of Baton Rouge’s bus riders being Black, buses were still segregated. #OnThisDay, the United Defense League (UDL) launched the #BatonRougeBusBoycott with a “free ride” network of Black volunteer drivers. The Montgomery bus boycott would adopt its model in 1955.

After the Louisiana Purchase, the Black Codes were enacted. declaring that manumitted Black people should never “presume to conceive themselves equal to the white.” Their movements, property rights, and social interactions with white people were restricted, relegating them to second-class citizens.

🌾 The semi-nomadic Fulani people moved with cattle across the savannah of Senegambia, the origin of many enslaved Africans. In early Louisiana, marshlands made cattle farming difficult, so enslaved herdsmen like Baptiste were crucial. #LouisianaHistory
