Unfortunately I must agree with the middling Resonant reviews. There’s glimmer of some amazing work here, the emotional beats hit well. But forcing it into this bland slog of an open world, spongy enemies, dull refreshing objectives saps the Remedy momentum. 2/5.

I’m enjoying large chunks of RESONANT but I can’t help but feel the open-world really detracts from the experience. Remedy EXCELS at the guided area, semi-open, not feeling “defeat these Hiss here” stuff when it makes the game feel so much less guided.

PRIMETIME: Insanely evil movie total malice from every frame. Incredible juxtaposition of Iraq War vs Hansen’s crusade, the most stunning scene is Chris doing bizarre bonding with the bait actor, tossing a baseball at 11PM before a storm. Just non-stop stress and anxiety. 4/5

I need a second-floor apartment so I feel more comfortable leaving the windows open. It’s safe here but it’s just loud from the A/C units behind me and I hate the idea of someone walking by and looking in. But I CRAVE THE COOL AIR.

Control: Resonant early thoughts: dig the movement, feels great to jump and glide. Combat might get wearing, enemies are SPONGES. Not feeling that NYC BUT WEIRD is as immediately evocative as The Oldest House or even the Alan Wake 1 and 2 locales, but may grow on me. Love all the SFX though.

Resident Evil: hate to say it, not really a RE movie! It’s got a lot of fun “oh I get that!” stuff but at no point did this have to be RE. there’s a distinction to be made between a movie about the player experience of RE (this guy) vs the in-game text of a game (every protag is competent!) 3/5.

My fridge is not working. My apartment has not come down to fix it since one guy tried something yesterday that didn’t solve it. Luckily I’m in bachelor-mode so no real food waste but once again I extend a hearty “fuck you” to all property management and landlords.

Hard not to feel a little anxious about the future with regards to oil, wars, economy etc! I’ve been very lucky but who knows what’s gonna happen! Trying not to stress too much but there’s very much a feeling of “oh, THIS time the music is really about to stop.”

My parents have a bird feeder and a hummingbird feeder and I am SO JEALOUS. Saw a hummingbird and cardinals (male and female), Carolina chickadee, a GIANT woodpecker and a mourning dove on the shed watching! I need a YARD so bad.

ONSLAUGHT: Wingard takes on Carpenter with strobing synths and misty nights. A bit weird tonally between the evil base and the domestic setup but just PURE MEAN when it gets going. Clearly inspired by the vile vibes of Call of Duty (the loadouts on the monsters) and the War on Terror. 3/5.

I think one of my favorite things to do on Fridays is go home from work a slightly longer way when it’s Fall and Winter. Just music going, thinking, new stuff to see. Not now, it’s still 90+. But I do love it then.

Aliens: Fireteam Elite 2. Kinda janky? Kinda budget? Fun with friends. I dunno. There’s a spot in my heart for games where you just shoot waves of guys and it glitches sometimes and you can have a turret to mow down enemies. Scratches the EDF itch for me. Enjoyable!

There’s someone smarter than me who can make something of the fact that the last 3 big Nintendo titles (Odyssey, DK, and now Splatoon Raiders) have a very similar layout with small, isolated worlds in voids with a ton of little collectibles scattered around. I’m not sure if it’s cheaper or what.

Beat BIG WALK with the fellas. Fun game, at the start. I think it gets long in the tooth by the end, not a lot of tricks it has to show you. It’s unfortunate that the main walking feels so loose and rough, you’re constantly bonding and sliding, you lose voices if you turn your head too far.

Big Walk has such a dogwater final set of puzzles it dropped the game’s rating for me. I enjoy a lot of it but I think the way-too-small mic range ruins the idea of walking with your pals when I turn my head and am INAUDIBLE. Lovely final sequence though.

Wow, 25 years of Arcanum! What a great RPG. My weakness is that steampunk magic world, and Arcanum is perfect for it. It’s so much fun with a pistol and magic, roaming around. The map is perfect too. This 1600s style, the hatching, just instantly evocative!
