In truth, I cried like a green boy then. I embraced him back. I had denied to myself how much I craved his touch affection.
Father hadn’t been unkind these long years, but he had been cold and distant as the mountain peak. The most affection I would receive, in a physical manner, was a pat on the shoulder or back on rare occasions when I did well at a task. It was usually enough. This winter, however, has made my need for warmth and comfort keen as a knife.
So I cried, yes. For a long time. When we at last separated,
father gave me a strained smile. He was unused to them.
“We will keep surviving together,” He said, holding my shoulders firmly.
“I thank the gods every day that you are alive.” His voice was warmer than I’d ever heard it.
“Thank you, father. I…feel the same about you.” I wasn’t sure what to say beyond that, so I remained silent. I attempted to return his gesture by placing my arms awkwardly alongside his, resting a hand on his strong back. I wondered if for a moment he flinched too, but he didn’t pull away.

This is when I had the strangest urge. I fear even to write it down. I wanted to kiss him.
