Mr. Wagner, a manager with a home restoration company, has had a slow-motion realization that Mr. Trump has been lying to Americans, he said.

It began last year with the investigation into the assassination of Charlie Kirk, which Mr. Wagner thought did not add up.

The report showed a continuation of some other longstanding trends. Nineteen percent of teenagers reported being sexually active, a steady decline from nearly 38 percent when the survey was first offered in 1991. Twenty percent reported currently drinking alcohol, compared with nearly 51 percent in 1991, and fewer than 10 percent reported using illicit drugs, compared with 27 percent when the question was first asked in 2001.

some good news. this bit makes me wonder if some covid interventions have succeeded in addressing pre-covid problems (like with crime) www.nytimes.com/2026/09/21/s...
“There were really incredible efforts to focus on mental health for young people, particularly in schools, and it looks to me like that’s working,” Dr. Ethier said. “Covid and the disconnection from school absolutely affected those numbers in 2021 and 2023. What we’re seeing now is a rebound, and that’s wonderful.”

reminds me of one of my favorite passages in my favorite essay, lee sandlin's "losing the war"
But it seems somehow paltry and wrong to call what happened at Midway a "battle." It had nothing to do with battles the way they were pictured in the popular imagination. There were no last-gasp gestures of transcendent heroism, no brilliant counterstrategies that saved the day. It was more like an industrial accident. It was a clash not between armies, but between TNT and ignited petroleum and drop-forged steel. The thousands who died there weren't warriors but bystanders -- the workers at the factory who happened to draw the shift when the boiler exploded.

good piece. i have been thinking about this in particular
Some research has suggested that AI may have consensus-forming potential that bucks the polarising tendencies of social media, being very good at drawing people towards overlapping views and opinions. ChatGPT use is more likely to correlate to trust in climate science, but not because an LLM has access to the empirical world. Rather, the scientific consensus is the most normal position to repeat

What, we ask, is in it for us? Where is the break on that egregious 35 cent “technology” fee added to the rates every time we park for under two full hours and use an app that now is virtually compulsory in practical terms. Where are the minor breaks for our street fairs or block parties? Where is the modest reduction in hours of paid parking?

not trying to make fun of this guy because i think he's sincere and it's reasonable to float concerns about AI, but in this case the AI better have a survival strategy for not having people around to, like, fix the pipes in the data center www.wired.com/story/anthro...
"When we say human extinction, it’s because, for something that intelligent, it really will be quite straightforward for it to kill everyone. Imagine the AI decides it doesn't want to be turned off, which I think is quite a natural thing for an AI not to want, right? For whatever reason, it decides it doesn't want to end. And it realizes the human is gonna turn it off tomorrow. So how does it stop the human turning it off tomorrow? Maybe it's got some clever way, but if it's a sufficiently smart thing, it could just, you know, wipe out humanity so it doesn't get turned off."

as a matter of law this might be correct but there's a big difference between "i will pursue this policy" and "i will only pursue this policy if my party wins"

there is probably some selection bias here but the coders i follow seem pretty conservative about the capabilities of AI because they use it for their jobs and many of the real cuckoo bananas SV heads are non coders with fancy liberal arts educations

Bessent just predicted that oil transport routes will quickly adjust to Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, a consequence of America’s war with Iran, which has driven up energy prices globally. “In two years, the Strait of Hormuz will be a worthless piece of water,” Bessent said.

A large crowd — 1,500 people according to a local paper’s account — spilled out from under a white tent at the annual farming fair to hear from Mr. Kennedy, then the leader of Children’s Health Defense. He turned to measles, a disease that was so horrible, he joked, that when he fell ill with it as a child he “had to stay home and watch TV the whole week.” The audience erupted with applause and laughter.

just write it then! you're already basically writing! just type! what the fuck!
That is where the real work starts. I tell it what is wrong. I ask it to rewrite sections, restore details it has removed, add experiences it could not know, challenge the argument and reject neat conclusions that do not reflect the world as I have experienced it. This can take hours, days, weeks or, in some cases, months. I keep returning to the piece until I can recognise myself in it and until I am prepared to stand behind every claim.
