Moths, occasionally birds. Still a grumpy dad, still hoping to mellow with age

Moth numbers holding up in SE Hants 125/34. Nothing new but a migrant feel to the trap (could be local breeders, who knows this year 🤷🏻‍♂️). 4x SMW, 1x RDP, 1x Clancy’s, 4x Blair’s Mocha, 1x Rush Veneer, 3x L-album W, 4x White Point, 1x Vestal and Turnip. Best of Y. sequella #teammoth #migrantmothuk

Nice selection Clare, looks like your garden is a week or so ahead of mine on the moth calendar

I’m not 100% convinced on this one, but it looks very different in the hand to the SSRs, shape, pose, ground colour etc. it’ll need a chop, along with another worn one. ObsID is 100% but seems to have a bit of a blind spot with this grouping

Very happy with that, though I nearly chucked it for a Square Spot 😬 Fortunately something in the recesses of the brain cavity went STOP! I can’t believe I forgot Merv 😆

I forget Merv was new for autumn as well 🙄

99/36 was a good trap last night. An odd looking SSR turned out to be a Suspected and a NFG. A smattering of migrants included my 2nd Plumed Fan-foot along with SMW, O. semirubella etc. Swallow-tailed, more 2nd Gen Rosy Tabby, first autumn records of R-l Quaker + R-g Carpet #teammoth #migrantmothuk

Another nice gap filler. 8 Ypsolopha species is pretty impressive 👏🏻

Very possibly. I think they could be local but not in any great numbers

Nope, it’s only in the pic as it was photobombing the other moth 🤬

That is a nice set of mothage Dave, a couple there that I wouldn’t mind seeing in the traps

101/45 was a decent return from last night. Dewick’s Plusia was the best moth, which took longer to say than it stayed on the edge of the trap! Deep-brown Dart was NFY and a good scattering of common migrants was welcome.Lesser Wax Moth is never common in the garden #teammoth

One of my favourite green moths. Well I like all green moths, except for Light Emerald which is annoying

Very nice Richard, slowly establishing itself along the south if things are to be believed

Crikey Debbie that’s a nice autumn trap! Some real good lookers in that lot

Good plan. I slept in and got hit by the downpour mid pack up this morning. Fortunately only 3 mildly peed off wasps to deal with.

It is a fine line. I think I’ll be packing up for winter this year as I’m likely to be out of action for up to 2 months, and let’s face it not a lot happens

Yes I’ve had a couple of spider web retrievals and they never look very pristine!

Summer and LYU numbers are down now. I quite enjoy the relaxed vibe of autumn mothing

Not sure what I meant by frothing (some of them do at leaf mines). I think I meant to say they’re a nice mothing group on Bluesky

A bit of a heavy shower here in the wee small hours, but worth the risk I think. Quite a few micros on the wing during the dog walk this evening so I’ve got my fingers crossed for something decent

Very nice Keith and I’m very jealous of that Sallow! Are you trying again tonight?

Not strong enough to worry here, but gusts may blow the sheets around 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hi Ian, the first number is the total count and the second is the species count. You’ll also see some acronyms kicking around like NFG or NFY, new for garden and new for year. Always ask, they’re a nice frothing on here

It was pretty cool and clear when I went to bed at 11pm, so I think most stuff came in later as it was cloudy at 6.45 am. Looks decent for tonight if temperatures and cloud cover hold up

So far it’s been a poor season for wasps and hornets in the garden. I’ve only really been bothered by them in the New Forest in recent months

🤣 Not my favourite bit of the hobby, but so far I’ve avoided the sting 🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻

65/28 seemed a decent return in the moth traps with a distinct autumn feel to the catch. First appearance of the season for Darth Moth and a smattering of Torts. Also an an interesting looking Blastobasis (probably just a worn adustella) #teammoth

I’ll be out tonight as well, it’s not exactly too taxing to count this number of moths.

Not quite the Mallow or Big Blue I am hoping for, but not a bad start to tonight’s moth shenanigans. Anyone else trapping the light fantastic this evening? #teammoth

Ooh Mallow! It’s on the want list and I reckon a reasonable chance of getting one. Only ever had one Large Wainscot in the garden

Lies, damn lies and statistics! Having had data interpreted by a stats team a long time ago (feels like another life), it’s amazing what you can deduce from it…….🤔

Dave Wheatley @wheatersdave.bsky.social · 27/09/2026
Interesting stuff Ruth, a fair spread of VCs in that data so not just a southerly bias to the 2nd gen
