Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Mute Swans - like so many others in Brooklyn - will eagerly throw down for good real estate. This guy was loudly charging a rival in Prospect Park Lake, which typically hosts only one breeding pair. #WingsOpenNotFlying #BirdOfTheDay #Birds 0211
Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 02/10/2026My #BestBeaks submission for #BirdOfTheDay is this Great Blue Heron. Yes, that’s a tongue. #Birds 1272

Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 18/09/2026True fact. And Dreher never even suspected it until somebody else made it public. The man’s ability to not see what he doesn’t want to see is nearly a superpower. 030
Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 18/09/2026Dreher wrote entire books about his hometown and his relationship with his father without figuring out that his old man had been a prominent leader in the local Klan. He was shocked to learn the truth. Nobody else was. 020
Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 04/09/2026No "respectable" journo wants the absolute shitstorm that would result from telling the obvious truth: A sitting senator suffered major brain damage and became an Israel First right winger. It's one more thing that everybody knows but the press and politicians can't say. 010
Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 07/08/2026A Northern Mockingbird takes flight with an Osmanthus berry. Juveniles can be hard to identify because of the heavily speckled breast, but the white underwing patches give it away. Greenport, NY. #birds 060

Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 14/07/2026Try the NY State Dept of Consumer Protection. My experience has been that you fill out an online form, they contact the business, and then the business immediately does what it already should have done. Not sure if this applies to interstate shippers but it’s easy enough that it’s worth a try. 020
Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 03/06/2026People who've spent their entire lives protected by wealth and privilege tend to be extremely uncomfortable with confrontation. They've never needed to fight or yell for anything, and they look down on those who do. 010

Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 02/06/2026I think they hire hacks and the occasional lunatic, but I always had a similar view: if they won’t hire anybody with a history of being racist, sexist, religiously bigoted, anti-gay, etc… they can’t hire anybody with real juice from the right. They remember the Kevin Williamson mess. 030
Richard Z @whalemaker.bsky.social · 12/05/2026These birds were willing to sit for portraits in Prospect Park, Brooklyn recently: Two Common Yellowthroats, a Gray Catbird and an Ovenbird. #birds 050
