in which i am doing some pepe silva conspiracy theory things to the concept of machine learning but unfortunately i'm maybe right
Well, when the engineers at Suno or Udio or whatever want to train a generative model, they set up a dataset of music, a loss function, and a training scheme. These jointly define a metric. A metric draws a boundary inside the space of all possible audio files and says "these score well" and "these score poorly," giving you a gradient that a model can train on.[1] They use the process of gradient descent along this metric to train a generative model, and if they've gotten all the fiddly little machine-learning bits right, they've created a model whose sole purpose is to pluck audio files out of the ether that score well. The ideal model is a transparent, unthinking thrall of the metric it's trained on. When you prompt this model you're just poking at it and getting it to reveal a decision already made by the underlying metric. So, my argument is that the act of creation is in the design of the model itself - the coding of it, the selection of training data and loss function and training schedule - not in the training or the prompting or anything else. In this view, all audio files that can be generated from this model were created the moment they finished the design document for the metric. If this seems strange... well, at what other point in this process could we possibly say anything was created?

I'd take this further. I propose that:

To design a metric that assigns scores to works so that they can be numerically compared with one another is, for any discussion of creativity and authorship, the same act as creating all works that maximize that metric.

wgwgsa.net/blog/posts/m... Essay in which I discuss how why i am writing "musisic" and not "music" + how to write "musisic" + how we are all being backpropagated by the great big gen ai model that is the modern music industry and the deep-seated dread i feel

Begin from the presumption that you cannot use your own instincts. Act as if your own sense of taste has been infiltrated by rogue agents. Create, initially, with a blindfold on so that you can't judge your own work. You can judge something after you've made enough of it that you can speak its language.

medium.com/@TmlrOrg/ask... anecdotal but i too have seen the phenomenon of "people being unable to answer even basic questions about their code / work". for all "ai can be useful for coding!" people talk abt it, in practice it seems to end up like this
I am one of the Editors-in-Chief of the Transactions on Machine Learning Research (TMLR). I reached out to authors of 10 paper submissions to TMLR, originally slated for desk rejection, asking for a meeting to discuss their paper. The author-attendees of the meetings included undergraduate students, master’s students, PhD students, faculty, and independent researchers. Most, but not all, of these papers were solo authored.

Of the ten submissions:
- Authors of one paper withdrew their submission.
- Authors of one paper said they were unavailable due to other commitments.
- Authors of one paper scheduled a meeting but did not show up.
- Authors of three papers were unable to answer basic questions about the paper.
- Authors of three papers answered questions about high-level ideas in the paper but had difficulty when asked further questions on technical details.
- Authors of one paper answered all of my questions (although I identified a major flaw in that paper).

I then write a custom little UI to control the song as it plays. I kind of improvize with this and then record the results into FL Studio for producing. This one is simple because I have made this patch specifically to the track "Lake of Rot," so most of the logic of the song is hardcoded already

And then write code that sequences how those synthDefs are called (here, I have a made a very rudimentary sequences using arrays of strings, and then I have a huge routine that turns that into drum patterns and varies them humanish-ly.

SuperCollider is an audio programming language where you define first a bunch of "synthDefs" that specify how sound is generated from control signals (this is the first half of the very long patch that makes the synth backing for the track above)...

my review fwiw
"The Fawn" is pleasant. "Wrecker" is excellent. "Yumyucker," though, is one of those tracks that makes you think - fuck, why has nobody else done this? How am I hearing something so novel? Maybe nobody else has the detail-oriented brain and the patience to micromanage an Ableton timeline like this. Or maybe nobody else has the sheer drum compression chops and the finely tuned ear as this guy does. Or maybe it's lightning in a bottle. But I think that it's simpler: Will Weisenfeld is the only man alive who's seriously thought about how to communicate, in the medium of screeches and drums and tempo modulation, what it's like to be very nervous while you think about having weird gay sex.

just because something is experimental does not mean you can compromise musical integrity and cohesion otherwise how is the listener supposed to interpret and understand the art. i fear you cannot take chops then splice them together at non random intervals and call it music
