I love this so much! My parents live in southern Arizona and I feel like I’m looking into their back yard.

"How to also be the illustrator of over 100 books and not have severe wrist and hand problems"?? LOL. My wrists are cranky lately and my first thought was, "ouch." #kidlitart

I just want to sit and watch Michaela Goade paint and draw all day and absorb all of that magic. If she talks about her technique and materials, great! Otherwise, just watching would be lovely. #kidlitart

Yes!! It might take a long time. But, it will take even longer if you don't do it. #kidlitart

A4: I like in-person where there is a relaxed and fun social aspect in a small group. Otherwise, I also like live demos so I can see the skill in action. Alt: I don't learn great just from reading only text about it. I need visual examples or hands-on exercises for it to sink in better. #kidlitart

Yup! When I was at Boyds Mills, I had a great mentor meeting with @kdmaz.bsky.social and was so inspired by her feedback that I went back and completely re-wrote my story that day. It had the same theme, character, and such, but I felt like re-writing the whole thing would work better. #kidtliart

So true! Take the critiques that are useful and resonate and leave the rest. I was spoiled by a great mentor and critique group this summer at @boydsmills.bsky.social #kidlitart

It was! It really got my wheels turning. And I realized I already have multiple hooks in the stuff I'm working on now. But, it's helped me see what they are so we can write a better pitch for it. #kidlitart

Absolutely. Can be applied to a lot of life. You can't give up too easily in this industry. #kidlitart

A3: Learning to take critiques and not be afraid to pull apart your story and try again. Alt: Hmm... this one's hard. Maybe that my art doesn't have to be perfect to put it out there? #kidlitart

Victoria K. Chapman (she/her) @weyakindesigns.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Yes, exactly! There's more community camaraderie and such. And I come out of them feeling a lot more inspired and excited. #kidlitart

Thanks! I thought I'd be good at it because I'm a musican and songwriter. But, I've learned songs and books are very different and have different rules. #kidlitart

Victoria K. Chapman (she/her) @weyakindesigns.bsky.social · 25/09/2026

Haha, I feel like it kind of is! At least I've found over time I get to a point where I'm like, "yeah, this has to be done now or I'm going to mess it up." #kidlitart

A2: Yes! It keeps things fresh for me. Trying new techniques and mediums gives me more fun things to throw into my tool belt. Alt: If I could afford to go to more in-person learning events. I enjoy the in-person experiences a lot more than the online ones. #kidlitart

Mostly about how having more than one hook in your story that will get potential buyers' attention is really important for selling it. Like for example, it has counting (math literacy), SEL elements, and cute animals, like one of Carrie's own books "Dozens of Doughnuts". #kidlitart

A1: I learned all about marketing hooks in PB stories from @carriefinison.bsky.social on today's @12x12challenge.bsky.social webinar. It was really inspiring and interesting! Alt: Even though they say it's hard to sell, I would like to get better at rhyming and meter in writing. #kidlitart

Hahaha! Thanks! I'm definitely having some self-doubts. But, hopefully I do alright. I'm hoping the extra experience with groups of kids will help for future school visits and such. And give me some inspiration in general. #kidlitart

Hello, everyone! Welcome to the chat. Please remember to use the #KidLitArt hashtag in your replies. Thanks! My wins: I haven't caught the plague from my family (yet), I sold art at a fun craft show, I'm going to start sub teaching K-5 soon, & I'm getting closer to finishing my next book to sub.

Opossum fun facts: They are mammals who are not susceptible to rabies. They are also North America’s only marsupial. Plus, they are omnivores eat things like bugs, including ticks. Overall, really beneficial critters who are adorable to boot!

Oh gosh, I don’t know an exact plot, but it would definitely have animals in it. Probably animal characters. But, not like anthorpomorphic ones. Actual real animals. #kidlitart
