The latest #PeatColours site is now up and running - Karukinka National Park, located in the Tierra del Fuego, Chile. Our first (but hopefully not last) South American site! This site is in collaboration with the Wildlife Conservation Society Chile

Place aux milieux humides du Québec ! C’est ma période préférée de l’année pour observer leurs couleurs. Faites défiler les photos de quatre sites du projet Suivre la couleur des milieux humides au Québec pour voir comment ils changent au fil des saisons.

It’s my favourite time of year on a peatland! Scroll through the photos from four #PeatColours sites below to see how their colours change through the seasons. Each box in the colour index comes from a photograph taken at that site during the year. #peatlandsmatter #peatlands

Presenting our work on the interactions between linear disturbances and wildfire on boreal peatland carbon exchange at #IBFRA2026 We measured these sites in 2018/19 - they burned in 2023 and we went back in 2024 to the exact same plots and measured them again for 2 more summers!

Last week of fieldwork (for me!) this week for the summer. We installed minirhizotron tubes at the flux collars in our open and treed bog for incoming postdoc Miranda Hunter’s project looking at above- and belowground productivity/phenology Ended the trip with a nice poutine by the river !

Not to be outdone, Tracking the Colour of Peatlands (#PeatColours) is now in its third year. We've had over 1000 photos so far this year. I love seeing people engage with peatlands, sharing their photos and helping us understand their dynamics through the dataset that is being produced!

Since launching 'Suivre la couleur des milieux humides au Québec' in May '26 we've already received 525 photos from citizen scientists across our first 9 sites! Not only is this a fun project to help understand seasonal change in wetlands, but it helps raise awareness of these important ecosystems!

Left the peatlands behind this week and got to work in this beautiful freshwater marsh! My new masters student Maya will be measuring GHG fluxes using our new stackable chambers as part of the CARBONIQUE project Lots of fieldwork this summer (which always bring a little stress) but a lot of fun!

Another productive week in the field doing carbon inventories and collecting peat cores (led by C Paleo lab) while my new PhD student Renaud and I got to grips with some new field spectroscopy equipment for his project. Still feel very lucky to be able to work in these beautiful landscapes

On #WorldWetlandsDay, I’m celebrating the beautiful wetlands here in Québec. They cover~18 million ha of the landscape and encompass a wide variety of different types. #Wetlands everywhere are critical ecosystems - they store carbon, regulate water, and sustain biodiversity! We must protect them!

We discovered that green leaf phenology varies significantly by #peatland type and vegetation community: • Bogs reach peak greenness about 10 days later than fens. • Vegetation type and local energy balance strongly influence #phenology
