Both are caused by the same bacterium - Yersinia Pestis. And there’s a significant body of thought that the Black Death in the 1340s was caused a combination of the two. Just to add a note of cheer…

Oh totally. Mine does eat them sometimes. Ironically he can’t stand lasagne!

I’ve also just remembered they did a whole bit about how nutritious and cheap lentils are and she floored them with the question “have you ever tried to get a child to eat lentils?”. So there’s that angle as well

Absolutley. It was the reaction of the chefs that’s really stuck with me. It just simply hadn’t occurred to them. Sadly I’ve never been able to find the episode again when the thought has come to me

They were going on about cheap cuts of meat etc and she basically called them out on it and said ‘when is a normal person meant to cook that?’. She also said if you’re a working parent from a struggling background coming home at 6pm, of course you’re going to stick on a lasagne from Iceland

One of the most impactful things I’ve ever seen on TV was an episode of Food and Drink from I think 2014 where they had a guest talking about food poverty. She made a clear point about time poverty to the very obvious confusion of the chefs

I’m well! Oddly enough I’m just on my way home from the MacCurdy Dinner late night. Was very strange being back and staying in college room. Lot of familiar faces though which was lovely! You’re in NI now I see?

Besides everything else wrong with this, I see we’re once again completely forgetting the existence of Northern Ireland and the GFA

The borders between England and Wales and Scotland were so contested until relatively recently they have specific names - ie the Marches and the Debatable Lands!

So there’s a ‘oh actually 100 years is quite a bit longer than you think’ but also ‘15 mothers ago’ doesn’t immediately feel like it should be that long ago, but it’s actually the mid-to-late C17th

Peter Wasson @weterpasson.bsky.social · 30/07/2026
I can’t remember who it was but I saw someone parse longer time periods in ‘mothers’. So 100 years is around 4-5 mothers ago. Realise this is just ‘generations’ but it hits harder for some reason. It both compresses and expands how you look at the passage of time

I’m fairly certain the Voyeurism (Offences) Act 2019 is wholly silent on the gender or sex of the victim…

I was sometimes viewed with suspicion (“why is there *a man* here”). Other times I got gushing praise (“OMG, you’re so good to do this”), which got irritating quickly. I had one conversation with a mum at a toddler group where it took three attempts to get ‘I’m a stay at home Dad’ to compute
000
Peter Wasson @weterpasson.bsky.social · 16/07/2026
A different perspective. As a (recently again) stay at home Dad I find this chart disheartening, but not surprising. I remember taking wee man to toddler groups and 9/10 times I was the only man in the room (and even when not alone, I was invariably the youngest man; ie not a granddad)

The thing about the whole reflecting pool in DC piece I don’t fully get is that we know how to manage algae in ponds. Oxygenating plants. Other plants. Wildlife. Why is dumping massive amounts of hydrogen peroxide the go to solution?

I mean I’m in favour of enforcing the duty like jury duty and making voting compulsory, personally. If you want to spoil your ballot, go ahead, but you still need to actually turn up!

I think you may also be underbaking the number of people who were simply unaware that the by-election was happening. Suspect that’s a large chunk of the 41%. Which suggests other problems with engagement with the democratic process, of course

I seem to remember when studying criminal law in 2006 a lecturer telling us the only part of the body where touching hadn’t been ruled as sexual was the elbow, but that was only because it hadn’t come before a court yet (at the time)

In the KJV specifically, John 1:5 “And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.” I know that comprehended here is an old version of the word. But something about the idea of the darkness simply not understanding the light has always affected me

The Angry Flames and Torches movements are somewhat of their times but definitely a bit more shocking that the Benedictus setting would suggest
110
Peter Wasson @weterpasson.bsky.social · 06/04/2026
The thing is, I quite like the Mass for Peace. The Benedictus is massively overdone, but it is the most accessible part. And all classical radio stations neglect choral music. As a symphonic Mass it’s actually pretty good. I’ve sung many a worse modern Mass setting. Composers shall remain nameless

It’s reported that Starmer, Macron, Von der Leyen and Rutte are going to the White House with Zelenskyy. Genuinely curious about what happens with if they refuse a meeting with Zelenskyy because he is ‘not in a suit’ with them in tow

I seem to remember there was Mock the Week episode around the time of the financial crash when they phoned the Treasury to ask if they were using British billions. The press officer said yes of course to which the researcher asked ‘really? A million million?’ And the they had to back track
