She’s Swiss, but this was allegedly a hit in France (and I believe has a French version somewhere). Your call, great song though! m.youtube.com/watch?v=RE0o...

This one’s a little artier, but wow is it amazing. Pierre Barouh made this album, “Le Pollen,” in Japan with an all-star cast including Sakamoto and Takahashi from YMO, Yasuaki Shimizu and David Sylvian. Maybe stick this one at the very end of the playlist: m.youtube.com/watch?v=s__T...

Having a comfortable home, the ability to afford groceries and even buy records and take a nice trip somewhere now and then seems increasingly like a massive gift for which I’m exceedingly grateful

Oh god, I guess we should cross that one off the list too. I had a steady job at the time and things didn’t change that much but my dad was let go from his job and then ended up having to take a big pay cut when he finally found something else. It’s been a right mess ever since Bush-Gore, hasn’t it?

Can’t even fathom where we will be at culturally or politically by the end of this decade … one has to be optimistic, as it doesn’t seem like things could get worse (been wrong many many times on that though …)
120
Travis G @westofthefields.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I wonder if that’s a disconnect between people who don’t really follow politics much and those of us who (stupidly) do … the Republicans dominating that 2010 election kind of killed my hopes for progress on most issues at that point
120
Travis G @westofthefields.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
Reducing culture to politics is probably not correct, but it does seem to set the backdrop for what is happening in the arts pretty frequently
010
Travis G @westofthefields.bsky.social · 08/10/2026
I should check this out, 21st century culturally (mercifully not for me personally) seems kind of an uninterrupted run of horrors, minus the brief 2 year span of what turned out to be way too much optimism following Obama’s election before the Tea Party midterms

I still don’t understand what the seeding situation was here. The White Sox as the lowest remaining seed should have gone to play Tampa, the No. 1? Why were the Yankees the opponent?

The stupidity also shows no sign of stopping and if anything has grown at an exponential rate over the past decade or so, which is probably the most depressing part

I have an ancient history with R.E.M. but had no interest in seeing the Shannon/Narducy tribute, until it came to Detroit & went to try to figure out what was going on, for my @salon.com column: www.salon.com/2026/10/07/m...
salon.com
Michael Shannon’s R.E.M. tribute reminded me why I love the band
The actor’s show with Jason Narducy is more than nostalgia — it celebrates the band’s artistry.

A lot of the greats have reached the terminal decline phase (U2) or just decided not to sully a great discography with inferior new material at this point (LCD, Radiohead) but Beach House haven’t let me down yet

Travis G @westofthefields.bsky.social · 07/10/2026
Beach House might be the last band out there (for me at least) where each album feels like an event, a new chapter in the discography that will be as good or even better than what came before. I thought “Once Twice Melody” was up there with “Teen Dream” and “Bloom” as their best work

20 years of Beach House. they perfected the sort of record where track one you're like 'yes! damn this is the stuff' & by track 11 it's a bit "oh is this still on?" that said, I do love them, their commitment to tactile LP/CD covers, their luxe melodies, their immaculate vibe. here's to 20 more

Yup, Mainer here and we have a governor’s race that everyone has basically ignored because the Dem is expected to crush her GOP opponent while at the same time every single Senate poll is like a dead heat. I wouldn’t be surprised if Collins pulls it out yet again

here's to Iggy's best album of the decade, w/ some of Bowie's strongest compositions during what he called his "doldrums." A record fully of its time, filled w/Yamaha DX-7 & nicking a Huey Lewis riff on one track--yeah, it's "dated." but also a lot of fun, & has some great melodies & vocals

The Maye stuff is so bad because it’s not just INTs, it’s absolutely back-breaking INTs in the end zone or just randomly dropping the ball when there’s zero defensive players around you. I gave up watching yesterday after the first quarter

Love that they finally tried to finish this as a Bond theme, it got rejected because it wasn’t an “original song” written for the film (I believe that’s the story?) and thus wouldn’t be Oscar eligible, they went back and wrote a new song (“Spectre”) and that also got rejected

But there’s got to be a way to come up with a “hits” chart that is more responsive to new stuff, turns over more frequently and even maybe surprises people now and then

I think this has reached the point where it’s Billboard and the music industry’s problem. If they’re fine letting the Hot 100 be stagnant and lifeless week after week (a pretty valid reflection of “mainstream” pop culture here now), so be it

The only thing that’s going to shift “Texas” off No. 1 is either Taylor or “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” both of which are even more depressing than letting it stay there

The Gillette Company
Would someone tell me how this happened? We were the fucking vanguard of shaving in this country. The Gillette Mach3 was the razor to own.
Then the other guy came out with a three-blade razor. Were we scared? Hell, no. Because we hit back with a little thing called the Mach3Turbo. That's three blades and an aloe strip.
For moisture. But you know
