We put livestock in wildlife habitat, subsidize the grazing, pay to kill the predators, and reimburse livestock owners for their losses. Of the 118 bears and mountain lions killed by Wildlife Services in Colorado from June 2024 through October 2025, 60% were killed on public lands.

All of this raises a larger question about who and what our public lands are actually for. Why should non-native domesticated livestock be presumed to belong on these lands, while a native keystone species that evolved with and helped shape these ecosystems is treated as an unwelcome exception?
