By planting crops in circles (rather than wedges) with perennial grasses in between, the circular grass buffers help the soil hold water. Great for center-pivot irrigation! Read about the study: doi.org/10.1038/s442...

In February, RAWCS project researchers tested soil moisture sensors for installation at a pistachio orchard study site in Lordsburg, NM. Soil moisture sensors help researchers to determine how quickly applied irrigation water leaves the soil. RAWCS is a water research project: rawcs.nmsu.edu

Attendees of a biochar/soil health/water management workshop in Las Cruces, New Mexico got to learn about the RAWCS project from program manager Angus Aney. Attendees helped turn tree trimmings into biochar, a one-time amendment that can help soil hold onto water.

Researchers with the RAWCS project are working on validation and calibration of a Rio Grande farm income optimization model. Models are the basis for running simulations where various inputs and scenarios can be tested to learn, in this case, how to maximize farm income in the Rio Grande Valley.
