"Ew, that's a bed bug!" Ah, but wait... Under magnification, we see that it's actually an eastern bat bug (Cimex adjunctus), which does NOT prefer human hosts. Check the hairs on the thorax and abdomen; if the hairs are longer than the eye is wide, it's a bat bug. #backyardnature #entomology

Today's #backyardnature answers the question "Why is my rocktrumpet losing its leaves?" Mealybugs (family Pseudococcidae) are wax-coated pests that feed on plant sap; look for them on the underside of leaves, in branch/stem crevices, etc. There are 300+ species found in North America. #entomology

Here's the Virginia creeper sphinx moth (Darapsa myron). It's found in most of the eastern USA and has a fast life cycle; larvae can develop in three weeks, and it isn't uncommon to see 5 or more broods in a single year. #entomology #backyardnature
