#nowwatching "Ginger Snaps". A well regarded Canadian horror that looks like it channels a bit of Buffy. I'm always up for some Canuxploitation. #firsttimehorror

I'm finally catching up with "Messiah of Evil". A #beyondfriday pick that I missed back in the day. #firsttimehorror

Tonight's #firsttimehorror is "Death Spa". Apparently it's uber 80's kitsch that is so bad that it's good. We'll see how that works out.

My next #firstimehorror is Dario Argento's "Opera". Between this and "Suspiria", the man was quite the champion of the preforming arts.

"The Bone Temple" is the clear highlight of my belated Halloween warm up watches. Thanks to Ralph Fiennes deeply humanist character and performance, it's my favourite entry in the "28 Units of Time" franchise. #lastfourwatched

28 Years Later - The Bone Temple. Ralph Fiennes headlining a post-apocalyptic movie sounds like a classy way for civilization to end. #firsttimehorror

I honestly don't know how to respond to that.

I'm continuing my #firsttimehorror with "Jennifer's Body". I probably dismissed it the time as a Megan Fox movie. I now want to watch it for Amanda Seyfried.

I am belatedly kicking off my #firstimehorror Halloween watches with "Tales From the Hood".

What are the odds of these two actors playing love interests a decade before they reunited on a TV show? Pretty bloody high. #bootlegfriday

Jon Lovitz had a great run in the 90's. The Critic was a great show. #bootlegfriday

The Welsh Wizard himself. They knew how to properly open movies back in the day. #bootlegfriday

A very good week. Rebbeca is a twisted classic with a great cast and excellent production values. My Colt is My Passport is a cool blend of Melville and spaghetti westerns. #lastfourwatched

#bootlegfriday switches it up with some 80's high concept comedy. Alien bombshell Kim Basinger seduces Dan Akyrod in a screwball culture clash comedy. Join us here on Bluesky at 10pm and please repost.

A fine week. Perfect Blue is a very entertaining anime giallo that might make Brian DePalma jealous. Meanwhile, Josh O'Connor is very entertaining as an utter schmuck in The Mastermind. #lastfourwatched

#nowwatching "The Mastermind*. Kelly Reichardt and Josh O'Connor sound like a great double act to me.

Miami Vice deserves it cult reappraisal thanks to it's excellent digital cinematography that would give Christopher Nolan pause. Colin Farrell also delivers a soulful performance despite a ridiculous haircut and cocaine bloat. #lastfourwatched.

I'm #nowwatching "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home". For the princely sum of four quid thanks to National Cinema Weekend. Beam me up, to bargain prices.

A new purchase inspired by last week's #beyondfriday. Tsui Hark and Van Damme are great 90's Hong Kong action duo.

Spotted on the Athlone to Galway train today. I guess that Iarnród Éireann is finally getting ready to move on from covid.

R.I.P. Tim Curry. He could never be accused of underplaying a scene and he could indeed nimble the scenery on occasion. Yet he was a very entertaining and charismatic actor and a useful reminder that subtlety can be overrated.

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 23/08/2026

After the glorious excess of #beyondfriday I'm #nowwatching the other Tsui Hark Van Damme collaboration "Double Team". This is one is possibly even more unhinged with a climax involving a minefield in a Roman Colosseum, a tiger and Mickey Rourke. Oh yeah.

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 22/08/2026

Van Damme realising that his pants are literally explosive. #beyondfriday

I'm getting my Tsui Hark on in preparation for tonight's #beyondfriday by #nowwatching "The Blade".

Wake in Fright is a harrowing portral of psychological collapse in the Australian outback. It honestly made a bit nervous for Irish emigrants out there. #lastfourwatched

We did it last summer. What a movie.

R.I.P. John Irving. A talented director who directed the brilliant BBC adaptation of Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. He then went Hollywood with Arnold Schwarzenegger and Patrick Swayze action movies and plenty more besides.

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 18/08/2026

#nowwatching Wake in Fright. It's been on my watchlist for years and I'm looking forward to watching more Ted Kotcheff after the fine job he did with First Blood.

#bootlegfriday returns this week to close out the summer. I just have to have pick something. The tyranny of choice is real. Details this Wednesday.

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 24/07/2026

Chuck Russell was a gifted genre director. The Mask discovered Cameron Diaz. Nightmare on Elm Street 3 is one the best of the series. The Blob is my favourite. It gleefully subverted expectations by surprisingly killing off unlikely characters. It's practical SFX are also outstanding. R.I.P.

The Battle of Algiers more than lives up to it's reputation as a classic docudrama. It's a riveting and engrossing anti-colonial film that I can't recommend highly enough. #lastfourwatched

#nowwatching "The Battle of Algiers". It feels slightly wrong to watch an anti-imperialist film on Prime. But the 4k restoration looks very good.

010

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 20/07/2026

Continuing my dive into Prime's MGM library, I'm #nowwatching "The Hospital". An angry 70's black comedy about a dysfunctional healthcare system. Imagine.

R.I.P. to Brenda Fricker. A legendary Irish actress who specialised who gave excellent performances grounded in earthy realism.

You've been murdered. Who do you want on the case?

050

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 13/07/2026

R.I.P. to the fine actor Sam Neil. He was gifted with an impressive range. He could play avuncular characters with easy authority and could have been a conventional leading man. But he was at his best playing men who became unmoored and plunged off the deep end.

050

Wesley Dolan. @wesleydolan.bsky.social · 12/07/2026

#nowwatching True Confessions. On Prime, the premier for random old movies.
