Since 2019, at least once a year, I go somewhere I can see the Milky Way. For most of human history, dark skies full of stars were a shared experience. Not so today.

This year in Milky Way photography.

The Milky Way stretches out over the desert near the entrance to Ash Meadows National Wildlife Refuge, surrounded in the night sky by countless stars.

It is—that’s been a journey unto itself (working out science/faith issues), but the two are so mutually beneficial. Re: another comment I saw, I started at and greatly benefited from community college. Some of the best teachers I had were there. Mileage may vary, but it’s worth considering.

Would still love to study theology formally someday, and nothing along the way was wasted. But I never quite knew what precisely I wanted to be.

Considered becoming a pastor, so I started college majoring in history. Switched to physics, wanted to teach. Thought I’d rather teach college, so I started grad school, then got involved in research and landed an internship. I’m a scientist now.

I went back to capture what the astronauts said in full when the clock was stopped at T-10 minutes and they were asked if they were go for launch: This is Victor. We are going for our families. This is Christina. We are going for our teammates. This is Jeremy. We are going for all humanity.

I’d forgotten about this. Classic.

I lurk on BlueSky for the news, but I might as well start contributing more #photography.

Since @flightclub.io joined Bluesky, here’s a rocket launch photo I took back in December from New Smyrna Beach.

The light streak of a rocket launch arcs over a beach, illuminating the water. Faint, short star trails are visible in the sky.

I’d like to sit by an alpine lake for a year, just to watch, unbothered by time.

“When the enclosure of the psyche is complete, we lose the right to wander and roam and loaf about in thought, just as the enclosure of the commons restricted freedom of movement and disdained economically unproductive but life-affirming forms of leisure.” — @lmsacasas.bsky.social

Stumbled on this letter from Tolkien to Auden today. There's a wealth of wisdom latent in these lines—for writing and for living.

Reintroducing myself here: I’m a physicist studying rocket landing effects and planetary surface environments. I’m also a photographer, musician, and interested in the relationship between science and my religious faith.

Finally got a Milky Way photo this summer. Just after midnight on an Alabama backroad.

The Milky Way’s core rising vertically in the sky over a dark road, framed by the silhouettes of trees.

My plans to photograph the Milky Way this summer have thus far gone awry, so here’s a shot from last year in Kings Canyon NP.

The Milky Way rising behind a silhouetted ridge and pine tree.

Don’t know if this place will take off, but it’s good to see more familiar faces around. General intro: I’m a scientist working on space things and at this point mostly use social media to share photos. I care about the science/faith conversation, but try to engage sparingly with The Discourse.
