This little book, which I bought from Scholastic Book Services for 50 cents when I was 9, is one of my prized possessions. Written by a high school junior, it satirizes the hippie culture of the time with clarity and wit. Big influence on me. weseichenwald.substack.com/p/how-to-be-...

Here's a link to a blog post I wrote in February after the Lyres' second to last show ever, in Austin. It includes video of two songs I filmed there. The music lives on, at least. RIP, Jeff Conolly. You left quite a mark on our world. weseichenwald.substack.com/p/dont-give-...

What's worse: Having a colonoscopy, or attending your high school reunion? In both cases, the prep is the worst part. (In the latter case, the prep is having to go to high school in the first place.)

Happy 100th to the King, Mel Brooks. I freely admit that I completely ripped off the title of a column I wrote in the '80s for Boston Rock magazine, Cave 76, from a 2000 Year Old Man routine. Thanks, Mel.

Speaking as a music fan, is there anything better than finally getting to see a musician who you've been a fan of for decades, but gave up music years ago, finally get back on a stage and play those songs you know and love so much?

So Father’s Day, like hay fever season, has again crept up on us. Like hay fever, it’s long overdue for a complete overhaul and defunding. Anyway, here’s a Father’s Day column I wrote a couple of years ago that elaborates on my feelings about the holiday. weseichenwald.substack.com/p/happy-fath...

Among the musicians playing on the deck of the Titanic was a double bassist. Why didn't he just throw his instrument overboard, jump in after it and use the bass as a flotation device? (Yes, I know the thing would eventually sink, but what the hell, emergency.)

I hate the opening monologue segment on talk shows. It's been going on for 70 years, yet nobody seems to want to get rid of it. I don't care who the host is, either. The jokes suck, and the cringeworthy, pandering, blatant attempts at enlisting the audience to applaud throughout are the worst.

I'm sick of the Oscars. It's as bad as the State of the Union, except instead of one asshole talking for 90 minutes, it's four hours of many, many assholes talking interspersed with applause, unfunny jokes and bad music. And there will be a crappy memorial reel with all the focus on the musicians.

Never mind any other art forms. I'm getting the definite impression that the major cultural contribution the USA is making to the 21st century, the main artistic genre, is the Super Bowl halftime show.

Not to minimize anybody's death, but take the grief people in America are feeling right now for two people killed in Minneapolis and consider that an estimated 30,000 have been recently murdered in Iran by their government. Minneapolis and Tehran are sister cities in democide.

The way things have been going this weekend, this is the next headline I expect to read: "MALIBU -- Beloved entertainer Dick Van Dyke finally snaps, gets hold of an AK-47 and slaughters 51 people, injuring another 22, at his 100th birthday party." I know, I know. Sorry.

I'm fascinated by the Elaine May bio that @carriecourogen.bsky.social put out last year and I'm plowing through right now. She was known before that, but so much was forgotten. If a Nichols & May biopic happens, I'm picking Aubrey Plaza to play Elaine. For Nichols, Michael Cera maybe?
