Some consistency would be nice re: the standards an expensive university has to determine what actions (or alleged actions) are deserving of expulsion, no?

At Tales of Khayr, we believe fantasy should entertain first. Brotherhood of the Wolf is classic sword-and-sorcery inspired by Islamic history and legend: a group of flawed men from very different backgrounds fighting supernatural horrors.

Trying something new. Apparently some realities need to be spoon-fed rather than explained academically.

When we were getting this travel montage in Issue #3 ready for the printers, someone on the team suggested adding dialogue. We pushed back and our Creative Director agreed. Forcing dialogue into a journey montage is probably over-engineering things.

In comics, frames are important because they show you what you need to see, creating a sense of place, position, and focus. But frames (when done well) also anchor the perspective to reveal who a bit more info on a character.

Think Squid Game meets an R-rated Harry Potter, buried in the dark caves beneath 15th-century Granada. A group of arrogant, dangerous alchemists are dragged into a series of occult trials hidden deep underground.

I've gotten to the point where if I watch movies or TV shows, I make it a game to predict the next few story beats. When I do this with my wife, she gets annoyed because the level of accuracy ruins the enjoyment for her. But I like to flex, so I don't care.

The word "dignity" is being thrown around a lot in Muslim Twitter. People use the word for different things. From a traditional Islamic POV, a believer's true dignity rests on being Gods' voluntary slave. This is (understandably) something that might seem a bit alien to modern/post-modern people.

Despite what the online Daily Wire-adjacent culture warriors are saying, I found Nolan’s The Odyssey to be a moving, well-crafted film. Some things that jumped out at me:

People think building an action game means opening Unity or Unreal and dropping in assets. You haven't really built a game, though. You just built assets. A game is an engine that lets people walk away with a feeling. It's Art (capital "A"), after all.

In fiction, truly intelligent villains play "chess not checkers" and always have more options to draw from. Because they anticipate their enemies' moves, the only way to defeat an intelligent villian is to slowly remove their options or outlast them until they run out of options.

Any game/creator/publisher that relies on traditional gatekeeping, marketing spin, or "trust the process bruv" messaging is going to get SPANKED by the audience, I think.

If I were to develop a game, I'd want it to be difficult. If I want to bake in meaningful difficulty in single-player, I'd be deliberately "stingy"about using too many guard rails (e.g. checkpoints). Too much checkpointing can kneecap the fun of tension, route mastery, resource discipline, etc.

Games should respect themselves as a distinct art form rather than imitating film. If I want to watch a movie, I'll watch a bloody movie!

One can argue that games are more similar to music than movies. So, a bit more abstract and meant for repetition.

In Islamic law, it is a requirement to use water to clean oneself after answering the call of nature. Using toilet paper alone is generally insufficient. Fox News Boomers and ZOGbots will claim this is an example of “creeping sharia”.

Good fiction entertains you. The best fiction entertains you AND makes you think something you didn't beforehand. Brotherhood of the Wolf (crusaders, Janissaries, blood magic, "thin places") did both to me. Might do the same for you: talesofkhayr.com/blood-tax/

Muslim fiction usually collapses into two camps: preachy moralism or total nihilism. But we deserve a third lane: stories that face the darkness honestly without surrendering to it. This is the world I’m building, inshaAllah.

Most Muslims struggle with their deen not because they lack knowledge (although that is certainly a big factor, if Muslim Twitter is any indication!), but because they're fighting an enemy they can't see.

Brotherhood of the Wolf respects its readers enough to have some romance amidst the swashbuckling adventures without bogging down the action with 🌽. (Excerpt below from our upcoming False Light novella. Something might be blossoming between Tahsin and Jelena, a Serbian tavern owner.)

For years, fantasy readers were told what they wanted: brooding immortals, mortal girls with destiny issues, prophecies of love and doom, etc. Logic said this was right, of course. You write what sells.

Writers love to dream up worlds and type “The End.” Few like pruning tropes. I cut Koja, my iron-masked giant as the main character; it hurt but the story bloomed with Tahsin, a coward made hero. Sanderson warns: clichés choke books. Fantasy thrives only when we pull weeds. Sharpen your shears.

My business, independent fantasy publishing (graphic novels, prose, video games) revolves around the public’s stubborn belief that originality must lie in the avoidance of “tropes,” that if purged of enemies-to-lovers, fated mates, or fae courts, the genre would suddenly feel fresh again.

They tell you the main character has to be likable. Relatable. Morally clean. Easy to root for. But likable isn’t unforgettable.
