I can’t really social so much these days bc the doom and breathless takes are wearing me down…but it sucks to have an academic leader who falls down both on community and scholarship. Feeling embarrassed for the institution

I, for one, am fed up with "stochastic parrots" being co-opted to erase the work of so many brilliant scholars and activists. Some references in this thread, but there are many, many more that could be added.

Wait a damn minute. The things Arday did, like the marathons, had been previously covered, with first hand primary sources, by English news orgs, contemporaneously?!?! And yet the Telegraph and others just kept repeating that he'd lied about them, despite tons of documentation they happened?! 🤬🤬🤬

Turning Point USA aligning themselves with Cunningham should answer any lingering questions abt the impact of her statements & the groups who are rallying behind her. Somehow, I still don't think people will wake up to the reality bc transphobia is still an acceptable form of bigotry to most people.

Further reflection has me thinking about why we encourage students to cite rather than how professional citations work - though I understand that in a perfect world these are linked I think they often are not

Same. Citation is valuable to let a reader find the original source (with research or data, complete coherent ideas, other related work, etc) and give credit — with AI generated content, original sources are all boiled down, I guess, and not even recoverable. Can't do anything with that citation.

“Automation bias” is when people believe the output of a machine is accurate simply because it’s a machine. What is the term for when people “believe” the output of a gen ai image despite knowing it to be computer generated? www.404media.co/i-loved-that...
Notably, the judge in the case, Todd Lang, said he was moved by the video.
“I loved that AI, and thank you for that. As angry as you are, and as justifiably angry as the family is, I heard the forgiveness, and I know Mr. Horcasitas could appreciate it, but so did I,” Lang said immediately before sentencing Horcasitas. “I love the beauty in what Christopher, and I call him Christopher—I always call people by their last names, it’s a formality of the court—but I feel like calling him Christopher as we’ve gotten to know him today. I feel that that was genuine, because obviously the forgiveness of Mr. Horcasitas reflects the character I heard about today. But it also says something about the family, because you told me how angry you were, and you demanded the maximum sentence. And even though that’s what you wanted, you allowed Chris to speak from his heart as you saw it. I didn’t hear him asking for the maximum sentence.”
