Diplomatic dude. I know a little about international economics. I once explained the electoral college on Mongolian TV. Climate change believes in you. Vaccines are good, actually. "I could smell the mustard and onions."

I just finished reading Nnedi Okorafor's *Death of the Author* and it is all that and a fist full of beer nuts. Fantastic book. I'm also a bit of a sucker for a nove-within-a-novel, as in this. Recommended.

Yeah, yeah, it's a rather pedestrian comic strip, but this is simply wrong People on a plant-based diet are much less likely to suffer from constipation Get some fiber, peeps! (And not from a jar, some real food; eat an apple or something)
Shoe comic strip; character reads "9 out of 10 people who don't eat meat suffer from constipation", which is utterly false and if anything, backwards...

The winning it is SO MUCH August 10, 2026 heathercoxrichardson.substack.com/p/august-10-...
Foreign policy scholar and diplomat Philip Gordon, who served in the Biden White House, wrote: “U.S. acceptance of Iranian control over the Strait of Hormuz is an extraordinary outcome only made conceivable by an administration that squandered legitimacy, alienated allies, attempted regime change in a war it had not adequately prepared for and that is being forced to accept a catastrophic outcome without viable alternatives.”

He suggested that “in other circumstances Iran’s closure of [the] Strait by brazenly attacking maritime traffic and neighbors’ civilian infrastructure would likely have justified and led to a united, global response—like the U.S.-led naval escort mission during the Iran-Iraq war, the global coalition that reversed Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait in 1991, the multinational naval force enforcing UN sanctions in the Gulf in the 1990s, or the UN Security Council sanctions on the Iranian nuclear program in the 2010s—that led to the JCPOA.”

“Instead,” he wrote, “[the] US and other countries are now being forced to accept an outcome that would have been unthinkable before the war but seems to have become unavoidable because of it.”

The gobblydegook isn't the point but it helps obscure the point
Part of how you can tell this isn’t a document about science is that you are immediately faced with an absolute wall of business-speak of the worst sort. Did you know we must “tightly couple our science and technology enterprises to ensure that groundbreaking ideas invented in the United States are rapidly prototyped, tested, manufactured, and scaled domestically”? You do now!

That tone isn’t surprising, because Kratsios has no background in science or research.

YEP
This erratic approach to decision-making is what you’d expect in a personalist dictatorship. Republicans love to tout the unitary executive theory, holding that the president has expansive and unchecked power. But they have implemented that theory under the reign of a man who is bored by policy, violently opposed to listening to anyone who isn’t fluffing him, and lives in a self-contained narcissistic fugue of grievance and ego-wounds.

The result is a regime that is constantly tripping over its own bloated mushroom-like appendages — and a global order in which absolutely no one can trust that the United States will do tomorrow what it promises today.

All we need to know about Trump's proposed Arch of Narcissism and White Supremacy:
Text: "The proposed arch obscures the Lincoln Memorial, built to honor the president who steered the country safely through the Civil War, but perfectly frames Arlington House, the mansion built by enslaved Americans and once owned by Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The arch does not frame the nation’s honored dead, but frames instead the home of the man who led the armies of the Confederacy that killed them."

The 2026 GOP is the heir to the slave power in this and other ways...
screen grab of this text: "This pattern - expecting Republicans to behave wildly and cheat to grab power while expecting Democrats to behave according to the rules of normal times - has been going on now for years, and it is a dynamic that reflects the political patterns of the years before the Civil war. Then, Americans expected southern Democrats to bully and bluster and rig the system while northerners tried to jolly them into honoring the laws."
