In the coming months, we hope that management will be transparent and communicative about ongoing changes to our newsroom, including upcoming hires. We look forward to working with them, and meeting our future colleagues and union members.

We share these tributes to Inga and Dee because as the bargaining unit, we want to recognize how the work of each one of our colleagues uplifts each other, the station, and our listeners.

Our newsroom has been through a lot of change and turmoil over the years. Through it all, Inga was a kind, calm, steady presence who made sure we never lost sight of our mission: to serve the community to the best of our ability, whatever the obstacles, however few our resources.

You might not have heard her voice on air, but she had a hand in pretty much anything you’ve heard on-air at WAMU. She helped lead the way in breaking news, features, and our flagship show, The Politics Hour.

She brought an immense amount of experience, knowledge, compassion, and commitment to every assignment she took on. Inga was one of the few editors left after WAMU shuttered DCist and laid off 16 of our colleagues. Over the years, she has been a mentor to so many in the union.

Along with Dee Dwyer, WAMU laid off Ingalisa Schrobsdorff, our senior politics editor. That title doesn’t capture how many hats she wore. Inga, as many of us call her, was both our politics editor and the managing producer for The Politics Hour with Kojo Nnamdi.

Dee will still be in Southeast. We encourage you to follow her and her work if you aren’t already, on deedwyerjonts.com and her Instagram @deedwyerjonts.

WAMU is continuing Voices without Dee. We believe it’s important to continue serving Southeast the way she did. But the truth is, that work would be much more difficult without her, without her beautiful photographs, ideas, and community connections.

Of course, Dee’s impact on our newsroom wasn’t just about where she is from. Dee is a one-of-a-kind photographer, artist and storyteller who cares deeply about her community, about capturing not just its challenges but its joys and its beauty. She made our journalism better.

We believe that local newsrooms are at their best when they reflect the communities they report on. Southeast is too often underrepresented in D.C. newsrooms, including ours. Because of Dee, we heard voices on air that we might never have otherwise. Voices that need to be heard.

A native of Ward 8, Dee first joined the station when it owned DCist, initially as a Report for America fellow. In 2020, she started Voices of Wards 7 and 8, a sponsored segment that centers the voices of people in Southeast D.C..

We think it is important to take this time to acknowledge our two former colleagues, what they meant to us, and all they have done for the station and the community. The first is a member of our unit: photojournalist Dee Dwyer.

WAMU began newsroom changes this past May that leadership announced as an expansion in local journalism. What was missing in that announcement: WAMU also recently ousted two people essential to the local journalism it says it’s expanding.
