I've not been shooting much and when I have it's mostly been film which is mostly sitting in a bag, but I took my digital camera with me to a doctor's appointment a few days ago and got this nice little scene. #photography #black&white #Pentax #landscape #cityscape #interiors

The first screenshot shows conditions here in Honolulu at 6pm, the second one conditions in Lihue on Kauai, which along with Ni'ihau is set to get clobbered overnight and into Tuesday. Humidity here has gone up about 3 points the past hour, and the winds are shifting.

The Democrats attacking Hasan Piker in order to torpedo Abdul El-Sayed's senate run are among the best ever exemplars of @schwarz.bsky.social's Iron Law of Institutions.
As the Iron Law of Institutions says: the people who control institutions care first and foremost about their power within the institution rather than the power of the institution itself. Thus, they would rather the institution "fail" while they remain in power within the institution than for the institution to "succeed" if that requires them to lose power within the institution.

A whistleblower says USPS has been violating court orders for months in pursuit of a program that could disenfranchise tens of millions of people and the NY Times places it way down the page in favor of the bond market's upset tummy. Money talks, a plot to kill democracy walks.
A screen grab of the New York Times website shows a story about the regime's plot to screw up mail-in balloting for tens of millions of people placed way down the page with the three of the top five stories placed above it focused on money issues.

I was just reading about Roosevelt and Frances Perkins losing the battle to make their minimum wage a living wage, in those words, with corporate Republicans and racist southern Democrats working together to fatally weaken the legislation. I doubt that language would fly with today's party leaders.

My obituary in the comments of a surprisingly equivocal WaPo obituary.
A lifelong fan of criminal wars and their consequent war crimes, and later of genocide as well, Mr. Graham was respected on both sides of the aisle. Despite having described the orange pustule in the starkest possible terms as unfit for office, Mr. Graham became one of the suppurating wound of a president's strongest supporters and most reliable allies. There he is, Graham probably thought, and here I am; may as well relax and enjoy it.

RIP

Nothing splashtacular, cropped but otherwise minimally processed, and for once not converted to monochrome because even though I can't see them as well as most people, I like the pretty colors.
Color close-up photo of (I think) some blue and red berries on a shrub bordering a riverside cemetery in Hiezu, Tottori, Japan. The berries and a few leaves are in sharp focus, while most of the greenery is blurred to one degree or another depending on distance from the lens. It's pretty!

I happened upon two guys surfing the Sada River estuary off the Sea of Japan one day, something I'd not seen the likes of before. These small but extremely energetic waves were rolling inland from the bay, and the water was cold enough to warrant a wet suit while the air temp was up around 100F.
Monochrome photo of a man in a wet suit and a sun hat surfing in the Sada River estuary off the Sea of Japan, with small waves rolling inland up the river from the bay. The banks of the estuary are lined in concrete as part of flood control measures, and the water is roiled with rip currents caused by the meeting of the waves coming from the bay with the water flowing downstream. Trees line one side of the river above the bank, with a large white building in the background.

Sea of Japan or thereabouts.
Monochrome photo of a fisherman squatting on a seawall by the Sea of Japan contemplating his phone. His bicycle rests against the wall. The sea stretches out beyond the horizon. A streak of lighter-colored water over a submerged sandbar runs about 50 yards into the water from the wall.

I find the many small cemeteries dotting the Japanese countryside, some with as few as a half-dozen monuments or markers, some very old and some more recent, almost all well-maintained, to be quite poignant and—perhaps oddly, I don't know—reassuring.
Monochrome photo from a small cemetery in Hiezu, Japan, with a large, inscribed marble egg on a granite slab in the foreground, and a range of more traditional monuments extending back to the treeline. A neatly-kept gravel path runs between the two halves of the cemetery.

A rare, recent self-portrait involving a salmon farm in Japan.
A self portrait taken in the mirrored sign in front of the Nissui Corp. salmon farming operation in Hiezu, Tottori, Japan. I'm shown in a long-sleeved white shirt, dark glasses and a sun hat with the camera obscuring my face, just as I like it. The sign has characters in both English and Japanese.

Monochrome photo of Glenn Awong leading his band Maoli in concert at Blaisdell Arena in Honolulu on June 28 2025. A spotlight pierces the fog behind him. His right arm, covered in tribal tattoos, is pointing skyward as he sings. His head and white cowboy hat are reflected in the plexiglass drum baffle, while the drummer and lead guitarist are dimly visible through the plexiglass and the fog.
