The myth that Social Security is an accounting fraud has been pre-seeded by GOP information warfare dating back decades.

Shift the Overton window a bit more and it will become as explicit.

I don't dispute that the Republican Party has changed materially for the worse. What I am saying is that there's a version of the Republican Party that Sarah thinks was in the room, and I don't believe it was in the room in sufficient numbers to matter.

If there was such a Republican Party, please explain the pushes to ban same sex marriage often via state or Federal Constitutional amendments, explain Rick Santorum, explain Reagan's neglect of the HIV epidemic, explain DOMA.

You may have met people who were nice to your face. You'd have had some people who genuinely didn't care about your sexual orientation or gender identity. You'd have won a few skeptics over. But this is not an accurate description of the Republican Party even in Sarah's time.

Obamacare is why I don't currently support Medicare for all. I would put political energy into expanding the union and packing the Supreme Court, then we see what happens.

The less exciting response is that this is pure nocebo effect. The truth is that the food tastes the same, people just convince themselves that it's not as good. Much of taste is psychological.

Bulwark can be a BIT like the centrist Dems in SOME cases. Broadly they are center-right to center-left. JVL is hard to classify and he is likely sympathetic to some aspects of social democracy. They are for fighting the enemy. They'd be on board with tribunals.

weiwentg.bsky.social @weiwentg.bsky.social · 17/08/2026
I sub to the Bulwark. I understand your POV. If we look at the tankie subsection of the DSA, I think there is a prima facie case that we should be very wary of them. Some of them hold problematic policy views. JVL's case is that a big part of the DSA are social dems by another name.

To be specific, I believe they wanted something to yell at the Dems about, partly because they are bad people and partly to distract from Jan 6. Ofc they chose a community whose existence can be used as a wedge issue.

Case in point:
Karoline Leavitt shows a picture alleging that European kids are scheduled for 11 immunizations whereas US kids are scheduled for 72 (!), citing an HHS assessment of immunization schedules. I gotta tell you, this cannot be a real assessment. Anyway, Leavitt said "No longer! Thank you, President Trump and @SecKennedy!"

The inciting event was arguably Jan 6. That is, after Jan 6, a few Repubs started to say hey, maybe this went a bit too far. But self-reflection is not their style. I recall that not long after Jan 6, they started screaming about gender-affirming care and related issues. I could be wrong ofc.

Trump mismanaged the pandemic and a million people died* Then in 2024, we elected him again. Americans have the memory capacity of the housefly. * a million people died, but EXCESS deaths were probably in the range of 100k to 200k.

Wait, you said this is an easy pace for you. Feeling like it is an easy pace is a hallmark of Z2. It's possible you just need to get more used to interpreting your current heart rate. E.g. I now know that I tend to be ~120bpm in Z2, but it will drift up to 140 with fatigue and heat.

Are you an experienced runner or are you just starting? If just starting, it will get easier, your brain and body are still developing the movement patterns. And do you actually know your HR zones, or did you take 220 - age for max HR? That formula estimates the AVERAGE max HR for a given age.

There's one bunch of US intelligence agencies that assess lab leak, and another that assess natural origin, and ALMOST ALL are low confidence - meaning that there is no solid evidence, the assessment could be wrong.

Don't forget the murderers of Renee Good and Alex Pretti were experienced agents. More training is irrelevant - the agency is evil, it is hiring evil people, and more training will not make the people not evil.

Adolf Hitler, leader of the National Socialist German Workers Party, dies at 56. Over 12 years as Führer, he oversaw huge strides in aeronautics and consistently pushed for the use of German power overseas, but encountered opposition due to controversial population transfers.

I bet you that like the officers in the MPLS murders, at least one of the murderers here was an experienced officer. The issue is not that untrained thugs are being recruited, the issue is that ICE and CBP are rotten to the core and must be abolished.

The Bible does not actually say we must support them. It is unclear what the Book of Revelation means about the End Times. You should be a Christian and not support Israel conducting genocide just so we can unleash the apocalypse.

I hate to point this out, but there were a bunch of people in the pre-Trump Republican Party who were all for kinetic action in Iran, Venezuela, Cuba, possibly others. They did not appreciate the possible consequences of their mindless warmongering. Bolton was one of them.

worth knowing: if you Google you should see that ~40% of US households pay no Federal *income* tax. They do pay *payroll* taxes that find Social Security and Medicare (altho Medicare isn't fully funded by *payroll* taxes - it's also funded by premiums and general revenues).
