This almost feels like gambling. If you think there's a chance of someone worse winning, you should rank him last; If you think there is a chance of him winning above your picks, you should not rank him.

At $55/month for 100Mbps plus pricey hardware, I doubt you're switching to starlink with literally any other option, and if you have no other option I'm sure you're aware of Starlink?

Their regular coffee comes from a machine now, so it is ALWAYS consistent, everywhere, always, except at the not-really-a-starbucks-Starbucks locations. Unfortunately I prefer this to the bitter coffee that the vast majority of our local places sell for $1-2 a cup more.

How much of starlink's business is inflight wifi? I would think only a smaller fraction? For residential/business use, Starlink is rather expensive though, an alternative would be great.

That would have been my guess. "But what about if Baby Hitler is involved?" Unrelated to baby Hitler, sharing this very relevant link: neal.fun/absurd-troll...

It reads like someone repeatedly telling AI "This is good, but make it more assertive, make it more compelling" without anything behind it. Also trigger-happy on the <p> tags.

Do you have an answer for what you'd do?

It's many times more attractive than its neighbor across the street (TJ's parking lot) and the neighbor behind it (awful highway) and the neighbor next to it (closed target maybe?) I'll take it!

Yeah no. The only thing they're doing differently in China is publishing the models so you can download and run them yourself.

I've lived in a lot of other places, and visited most of the notable places in the country, and nowhere really matches Portland. Some are "nicer" but totally lack soul. Everywhere has some major drawback.

I think it's entirely unreasonable to expect a business to vet simple reservations, which is what the existing coverage out there made this seem.. When either a) they're made aware *beforehand*; or b) it's not a simple reservation, it's entirely different. Your clarifications belong in the story!

weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Thanks for discussing in good faith, btw. This all is not clearly "out there for people to read" in the story of this, hence me asking... Presumably that "night before" you let the restaurant know?

And FWIW, I am very in-favor of shunning and banning and slapping nazis.
200
weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
ABSOLUTELY not either. Just asking how anyone is so sure the restaurant knew this was more than just a dinner reservation for 8. (or however many?)
100
weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm _definitely_ not taking a side, I'm specifically only asking what their interactions with the restaurant were in advance of this. Was it a dinner reservation or was it an event?
100
weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Did that get published somewhere? My "I looked for a couple minutes in the usual places" summary made the backlash to the restaurant seem absolutely unhinged.
200
weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
Presumably this is that restaurant topic.. How was that business at-fault or complicit in this? As far as I could see, they dined there and their identity was only apparent after they paid? Is there more to this?

I had a pretty strong frustration curve, as you figure out what you can use it for vs not. I do think the big providers are going to be irrelevant in a remarkably short time, as people shift to local. Ironically maybe the one thing we will need to pay for is the endpoint for the search tool?
010
weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I'm having trouble understanding the justification to do this in the first place. All I can find is that some awful people made a reservation at a local business and the business found out afterwards that they were awful, after they paid? Where is the rest of this story?

It's such a stupid bubble. The local/self-hosted LLMs are getting so good, every two months there is a large evolutionary development. I just don't see a deep/broad need to pay someone constantly for this.. unfortunately this crap is slated to get into our 401ks and economy in general.
010
weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I wouldn't want to invest a penny in one of the big AI providers. For US$15k and 500W of power, you can have a box that can write code endlessly and extremely well. It's kind of a no-brainer for engineering, and engineering is the only discipline that you really need that much LLM capacity for.

TOD is not a bad direction. The hub-and-spoke transit map we have today does really suck though.. I would believe someone who had studied it telling me this is optimal for our ridership, but my gut reaction is "this is not optimal for our ridership."

There are five daily TPE-SEA flights right now? Not sure if these are all permanent, but I would think a bit of this traffic really originates from PDX.

so.... of course I clicked on these profiles ... then spent a non-zero number of minutes trying to figure out who is who and which opinion belongs to whom and that was really unpleasant. May I have my four minutes back now?

We have this general problem of what to do with people who don't fit in society smoothly..

weirdterd.bsky.social @weirdterd.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
Yeah, exactly. And the last thing anyone would actually say they want is them on the street. You may get an "I don't give a F" but specifically not "on the street."

Interesting. I suppose I am coming from the point-of-view that it has some worth. Maybe I need to think deeper - what does having this list actually let one do? What impact will it have? I guess it'll concentrate people into the poor areas, won't it?

It's tough also because I feel the most vocal about this are the most personally traumatized by it. The ease in which people end up on the registry is really something though.

I've found this usually ends abruptly with "People should know who they are, I don't care about consequences for them, they can suffer." I like the idea that the conversation can progress beyond that, but I don't usually find that to be the case.

It's like the "it's too soon" gun violence/gun control discussion. There is *never* a point in time that this isn't happening. The PBS "Pervert Park" documentary was something. I am interested in this conversation.

I think true wealth is unrelated to income, but you definitely want to keep a low income to keep your tax bill low. Otherwise they'll take 50% of everything you get. You're better off just not doing it! or so I hear.

If half the car-drivers started taking the bus because it was actually a better experience, then the traffic would almost cut in half, and the remaining ones could get where they're going more easily.

Thankfully for my own sanity, I am vegan but not a moral vegan, so have just resigned myself to saying just "nature is cruel" and "we're part of nature" and this is more or less how we got here.

If you can say animal lives are worth as much as human lives, I can kind of have empathy for the fanaticism. And along those lines, reluctantly even the pro-life stance, using 'reluctantly' to the max.
