Expression of the Day: "Right as Rain" "Right as Rain" is believed to have originated in 19th century England where the frequency of rainy days meant that, when it was raining everything was normal, copescetic i.e. "right."

#DYK? The origin of the phrase "zero in" comes from firearms and the act of calibrating the weapon at "zero" to insure precise aim.

#DYK? THE BREAKFAST CLUB was shot in sequence. The last shot was the last day. John Hughes, at the end of a tough shoot and fighting horribly with the studio, once the crew said "we got it." was clearly angry, sad and heartbroken. He said nothing and drove away. #breakfastclubday

#DYK? The Breakfast Club was filmed at Maine North High School at 9511 Harrison St in the N Chicago suburb of Des Plaines. The high school had been closed down three years before and the "library" in the movie was actually the gym. The cast used the former locker rooms to dress. #breakfastclubday

#DYK? The role of John Bender in THE BREAKFAST CLUB (Judd Nelson) was originally going to be played by John Cusack. Director John Hughes ultimately decided John Cusack presented onscreen inherently as too nice to play the movie's bully. #breakfastclubday

#DYK? The ages of The Breakfast Club at the time of filming were Molly Ringwald, Anthony Michael Hall (16), Ally Sheedy, Emilio Estevez (20), Judd Nelson (24). Often, scenes containing Ringwald and Hall had to be shot w/ doubles as the two had to be in school during the day #breakfastclubday

#DYK? Director Stanley Kubrick was a big fan of THE BREAKFAST CLUB and offered the lead in FULL METAL JACKET to Anthony Michael Hall. Hall turned him down and the part went to Matthew Modine instead. #breakfastclubday

#DYK? John Hughes wrote THE BREAKFAST CLUB over one 4th of July weekend in 1983 and based the story on a high school in the North Suburbs of Chicago that had an all day Saturday detention. The movie's original title was simply DETENTION #breakfastclubday

THE BREAKFAST CLUB was the 2nd movie dir. and the 6th written by the late John Hughes. Hughes directed 8 movies & wrote 34 in his lifetime. Born in Michigan in love with the north suburbs of Chicago where most of his movies took place, Hughes died of a heart attack in 2009. #breakfastclubday

#DYK? The quote from David Bowie's 1971 song "Changes" that opens the movie was suggested to writer/director John Hughes by cast member Ally Sheedy. #breakfastclubday

#DYK? The Breakfast Club happens on "Saturday, March 24, 1984" and the date was an inside joke. Filming for the movie began the third week of March and "Saturday, March 24" was the closest Saturday. The Breakfast Club opens by mentioning the date of its birthday. #breakfastclubday

#breakfastclubday is historically celebrated on March 24, the date cited in the movie as when the all day detention was served. March 24, is NOT the release date of THE BREAKFAST CLUB which dropped in theaters on Feb 13, 1985.

Final thoughts on ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. Well made, enjoyed watching. Says important things about liberal activism (OBAA is as morally conflicted about as GATSBY is about money) is maybe PTA's 3rd best due to his usual shortcomings. It's also not SINNERS which is a revolution.

Kevin Smokler @weegee.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
(9/ A Few) Also, last problem I have with ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER and most PTA movies: Does not know how to do villainy without it seeming outrageous and cartoony. See Daniel Day Lewis in THERE WILL BE BLOOD and whatever the hell Sean Penn thinks he's doing in this movie.

Kevin Smokler @weegee.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
(8/ A Few) ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER thoughts: (Spoiler Below)... Why in the world is the great Teyana Taylor only in 20 minutes of this movie? Isn't it a better movie if the character comes back rather than "disappearing" unresolvedly?
010
Kevin Smokler @weegee.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
(7/ A Few) ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER still has many of the flaws of PTA movies. Namely... 1. Too long by 40 minutes 2. Shamelessly wastes resources. Great actors in this movie who have too little to do includes - Benicio Del Toro - Regina Hall - Paul Grimstad - Teyana Taylor

Kevin Smokler @weegee.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER has probably been slagged 8 ways to Sunday for being liberal, self-congratulatory hokum and (probably) the reason it beat SINNERS for the Best Picture Oscar. I beg to differ OBAA is deeply conflicted about activism in the following two (very loud) ways... (3/ A Few)

Kevin Smokler @weegee.bsky.social · 19/03/2026
(2/ A Few) ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER is a flawed, but very effective watchable movie I enjoyed and is actually about something, a problem its director Paul Thomas Anderson often has but avoids here, i.e. his movies often feel great to watch and are about...nothing.
