reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

Being unable to resign in chess is a character defect I'm not talking about "tenaciously defending a bad position" etc, I'm talking about playing 50 moves with a bare king rather than risk showing any trace of humility or respect If this describes you: I regret you have not been raised correctly

I usually have a variation of this where I have ages to prepare for a show but then it keeps becoming apparent that I actually have much less time than I originally thought and ends with me going onstage without having practiced at all

Good to know! I almost forgot about the Universal fire implications, but reading about it, it seemed pretty certain that most of the impulse stuff would have been lost. I've got '97s of Black Unity and a couple of Coltrane's and they sound great. Folks say Black Unity sounds better than OGs even

Yeah I think that's part of what's kept me from listening to them for so long - being pretty certain that I'd love them and not wanting to risk it becoming the only thing I listen to! Yikes...

I've done a lot of reconnaissance and yeah, there was a moment when I realised that would be the way to go. (The album I actually bought was the Europe '72 tour 3LP which, while not a Dick's Picks, seems to be similar in spirit) Recognise the artwork from the Shellac album too!

This, but with everything. Build a society around an economy where only profit matters and this is the only logical result. You "behave" only to the extent that it is more profitable to do so than not. You need to be regulated to do it - there's no actual outward thought towards other people.

On the other hand, I think it's unwise to undercut good-faith efforts to slow down runaway development. This is where you create opportunity for thoughtfulness, intent, ethics to have any say at all in what's happening. If staff are doing this - and I don't doubt it - they're not the bad guys IMO

Also fighting the incredible urge to parachute in and "save" everybody by explaining why the artist they don't like is actually great Everyone mostly managing to behave so far - very admirable

I do fear that John McLaughlin / Mahavishnu Orchestra may defeat me though. Questing, exploratory, "spiritual" music sounds right up my alley...but rather than it not quite hitting the right note with me, it's more a case of it hitting the exact wrong note a zillion times (less cool than it sounds)

This question is weirdly close to the bone for me because if I don't like something that my tastes suggest I should, I tend to listen to it until I like it (a superpower; or a sign of deep mistrust in my own taste...) Has so far worked with Van Morrison, Joni Mitchell & Stevie Wonder to name a few.

I think AI-generated videos should not be allowed to be presented as of they are real. If you can't see how problematic it is, you haven't tried.

Berserker 82-0 • no spins ☑️ • no Wilt ☑️ Time to retire, maybe get my life back
Picking order was:
1. Dantley, IND 70s
2. McGrady, ORL 00s
3. Robertson, SAC 60s
4. Barkley, PHX 90s
5. Hayes, HOU 60s

Pretty much pure RNG tbh - 5 no-brainer picks. Probably the quickest game I've played.
Going into 5th pick like "right, I've got both spins to hunt a killer centre-oh I got Hayes, yay"

Seems customary for people to share their teams (wasn't sure if that would be a spoiler). Ben Simmons & Danny Ainge backcourt, anyone?!
82-0 team:
2010s Ben Simmons
1980s Danny Ainge
1990s Charles Barkley
2000s Tim Duncan
1960s Wilt Chamberlain 😬

I had the same Barkley-Duncan combo in my first 82-0 team just now - formidable pairing, clearly

My favourite finds are probably a NM original LP of Seamonsters, or Nic Jones' Noah's Ark Trap, but in terms of value I found a rare Northern Soul 7" (Ron Keith's Party Music) for 50p which I recently sold for £120!

Still haven't gotten around to it, but I will say that as I have aged and become a father etc, my appetite for bleak and harrowing cinema, for example, has gone through the floor. Getting soft, I think! 😅
