Nevertheless, WERD had permanently altered the media landscape. By 1968, there were more than 500 Black-format radio stations, as well as white pop stations that played “crossover” superstars such as Aretha Franklin. Still, just eight stations in the U.S. were owned by African Americans. /end
DJ Rander “Wildman” Adams works at the broadcast console and turntables of WJSU-88.5 FM, the public radio station located at Jackson State University in Mississippi, ca. 1967. By 1968, there was a staggering gap between the explosion of Black-formatted programming and actual Black ownership. There were 528 stations in the U.S. broadcasting “Black appeal” or “soul” formats for at least a portion of their broadcast day, compared to just 414 stations in 1964. Of those, 108 stations dedicated 100% of their programming to Black audiences, compared to just 50 eight years prior. However, only about eight were owned by African Americans. The other stations were entirely owned by white interests who employed Black disc jockeys to capture the market. It wasn’t until the 1970s and the formation of groups like the National Association of Black Owned Broadcasters that Black ownership numbers finally began to climb out of the single digits.

By 1968, Blayton was 70 years old and ready to retire. He also realized that a 1,000-watt “daytimer” station would not be able to compete in an industry rapidly shifting toward FM radio. Blayton decided to sell it to the highest bidder — a white businessman — while its valuation was still high. /9
The sign outside the WERD studios. In 1968, after managing the station alongside his son Jesse Jr. for nearly two decades, Jesse Blayton Sr. decided to exit the radio business and sell WERD. He ultimately accepted the highest bid, which came from a white businessman. The sale sparked considerable disappointment and frustration among Atlanta’s Black political and civil rights leadership. For nearly 20 years, the station had served as the trusted megaphone for the Civil Rights Movement. For leaders who viewed the station as a sacred community asset, transferring a historic piece of Black-owned infrastructure into white hands felt like a major step backward. This tension highlights a fundamental difference in perception. Activists viewed WERD as a public trust and a monument to the civil rights struggle. To Blayton, an expert accountant and lifelong pragmatist, it was a business asset that had a lifecycle.

When the Southern Christian Leadership Conference was founded in August 1957, leaders chose to rent space directly below WERD. This gave the SCLC direct access to a mass communication tool that white-owned media routinely denied them, right in the economic and cultural center of Black Atlanta. /8
MLK stands outside the Southern Christian Leadership Conference offices in Atlanta. There is a sign for SCLC above him, and behind that you can see part of the sign for WERD. Following the success of the Montgomery Bus Boycott, MLK, Dr. Ralph Abernathy and other civil rights leaders established the SCLC in January 1957. By August 1957, they chose the name “Southern Christian Leadership Conference” and rented office space in the Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodge directly beneath the WERD studio. Civil rights icon Ella Baker was hired as the SCLC’s first — and initially, only — full-time staff member to run operations out of that space. When the SCLC moved in downstairs, Jesse Blayton and his staff transformed the station into the movement’s primary megaphone. It aligned with their core mission of serving and protecting the Black community. The SCLC maintained its headquarters in the building for 50 years before moving next door in 2007. The pushback was also physical. The station’s original building was in a white neighborhood, and management refused to let the Black employees use the restrooms. Blayton moved the operation to the second floor of the Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodge in the historic Black district of Sweet Auburn. /7
The Prince Hall neon sign adorns the Masonic Lodge on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta. Founded in 1775 by Prince Hall — a freed Black leather crafter, educator and abolitionist in Boston — Prince Hall Freemasonry is the oldest and largest African American fraternal organization in the world. After being rejected by white American Masonic lodges due to his race, Prince Hall and 14 other free Black men secured a charter from the Grand Lodge of England. Over the next two centuries, the organization grew into a massive parallel society for Black men. The Georgia Grand Lodge established its base in Atlanta in the early 1900s. In the 1930s, Atlanta civic leader John Wesley Dobbs spearheaded the construction of the Prince Hall Masonic Grand Lodge on Auburn Avenue. The building was designed to be an independent, self-sustaining Black cultural ecosystem. By locating their offices in the Prince Hall lodge, WERD and the SCLC were insulated from white landlord retaliation.

The format change shocked the media industry and triggered structural pushback. WERD was restricted to a 1,000-watt signal. It could only broadcast from sunup to sundown and just cover the local Black neighborhoods, preventing its programming from bleeding into the surrounding white suburbs. /6
WERD staff announcer Jimmy Whittington (left), station secretary Margaret Ross (center) and General Manager Jesse Blayton Jr. in the station’s studios, Dec. 3, 1956. Despite the efforts of white radio stations to isolate WERD, it created a cultural phenomenon that went beyond local Black neighborhoods. Young white teenagers began secretly tuning in to WERD. In fact, white teens were 20% of WERD’s audience. They were captivated by the vibrant R&B, blues and jazz music that white stations refused to play. White parents in 1950s Atlanta viewed this as an existential threat to the racial hierarchy. Church leaders and conservative parents denounced rhythm and blues as immoral, sexually suggestive and corrupting. Mainstream newspapers blamed the music for a rise in teen rebellion. Parents tried to confiscate radios, but the invention of the portable transistor radio allowed teenagers to hide them under their pillows or listen in their cars.

Blayton replaced the existing all-white staff with a team of Black broadcasters. Known as the “Four Horsemen” — Joe Howard, Roosevelt Johnson, Jimmy Winnington and the legendary Jack “Jockey Jack” Gibson — these DJs didn’t just spin records. They revolutionized the American radio landscape. /5
Legendary DJ James “Alley Pat” Patrick, one of the early, breakout Black personalities and DJs at WERD. Before WERD went on the air, radio announcers on white stations spoke in a formal, rigid, mid-Atlantic prose. DJs such as The Four Horsemen brought the raw vitality of Black street culture, theater and musical rhythm to the airwaves. They introduced rhythmic rhyming patter, talked seamlessly over the introductory bars of jazz and R&B records, and used energetic vocal improvisations. Known as the “Mouth of the South,” Patrick used unpredictable, high-energy ad-libs and lively humor to create his own unique style. Beyond his radio legacy at WERD and later WAOK, Patrick leveraged his success to become Atlanta’s first Black bail bondsman. He routinely used his own resources to bail out jailed civil rights activists, including MLK, Hosea Williams and Andrew Young.

In 1949, white corporate interests controlled what Black citizens could hear on the airwaves. WERD started playing jazz, rhythm and blues, and gospel to give Black youth and families an outlet for their own culture. The station also broadcast community news that white stations did not touch. /4
DJ Jack Gibson (popularly known as “Jockey Jack” or “Jack the Rapper”) reads the news in the WERD studio. Gibson was the station’s first on-air voice and its most famous personality. He pioneered the high-energy, rhythmic, “jive-talking” style of radio that targeted Black audiences with R&B, gospel and jazz, creating a template for modern urban radio. Because WERD was a small, independent operation with a 1,000-watt daytimer signal, its staff wore many hats. DJs such as Gibson were on the air for hours at a time. While spinning records, they were expected to read news updates, school closures, local obituaries and church announcements straight from the teletype or community call-ins. When it came to major civil rights updates, the news often came straight from the source. Instead of waiting for a traditional reporter to write a script, MLK or SCLC staff would tap on the ceiling. Gibson would lower the studio microphone down the window to the SCLC office below.

Blayton was a pioneering businessman, educator and the first college-educated Black CPA in the U.S. His overarching philosophy was focused on advancing Black economic empowerment. His immediate goal was to prove that a Black-owned business could compete, thrive and serve an ignored market. /3
Atlanta Mayor William B. Hartsfield (left) congratulates Jesse B. Blayton Sr. (right), owner and president of WERD, on the station’s fifth anniversary, Oct. 3, 1954. Mayor Hartsfield was a pragmatic politician. While he operated within the structures of Jim Crow segregation, he realized overt, violent racial strife would destroy Atlanta’s chances of attracting major national corporations. He coined Atlanta’s post-war slogan: “The City Too Busy to Hate.” Congratulating Blayton was a calculated PR move to project an image of racial moderation and economic progressiveness. It was also political necessity. After the Supreme Court struck down Georgia’s all-white primary system, the Black vote became a critical swing factor in city elections. For Blayton, having the white mayor of a segregated Southern city come to his station to offer official congratulations was a major victory. It served as a powerful validation of his “entrepreneurship as resistance” philosophy.

Jesse B. Blayton Sr., an African American accountant, professor and bank president, purchased the 860 AM frequency for $50,000 in August 1949. The frequency belonged to a white country music station that was $18,000 in the red. Blayton immediately turned it into a highly profitable enterprise. /2
Jesse Blayton Sr. Photo credit: Radio Hall of Fame. In 1928, Blayton became the first college-educated Black Certified Public Accountant in the U.S. and only the fourth African American to hold a CPA license. He served as a professor of business administration at Atlanta University for several decades, mentoring generations of future Black business leaders. Beyond radio, Blayton co-founded the Mutual Federal Savings and Loan Association, providing essential banking and credit services to African Americans who faced discrimination at white-owned financial institutions. By purchasing WERD in 1949, Blayton sought to give Black citizens a dedicated, independent voice in a heavily segregated media landscape.

#ResistanceRoots Today in history, 1949: WERD, the first Black-owned radio station in the U.S., opens in Atlanta. Launched to give Black citizens a dedicated, independent voice in a segregated media landscape, the station became a vital command center for the growing Civil Rights Movement. /1
Jesse Blayton Jr., General Manager of WERD, in the station’s studio, 1949. WERD became the accidental blueprint for modern Black media, proving that financial independence and cultural fluency are tools for social liberation. The station’s DJs pioneered fast-talking, rhythmic, rhyming “patter” over musical tracks. This style redefined the disc jockey profession and was later adopted by mainstream white radio. By sharing a physical building with the SCLC, WERD provided MLK with a direct, unfiltered pipeline to the public. The station circumvented hostile white corporate media and kept the community safe, unified and organized. WERD’s financial success proved that a Black-owned enterprise could thrive in the heart of Jim Crow segregation without relying on white institutional approval. It forced the corporate white establishment to respect and reckon with the economic and political power of Black consumers and creators.
