I’m not a very creative person, but I feel like X thing but Y had limited utility even before the theft machine. If you’re making balatro but not poker, it feels a little bit cynical, even without AI. The best things were always grounded in your personal story.

They’re forcing us to use it at work, and while I think the results are surprisingly good from a siloed perspective, it has also turned me into a soulless husk and we’re also not even the ones paying for it! I suspect we’ve racked up millions in costs for a codebase only AI can navigate.

But even there, it does feel like the value of the tool is so obvious it’s understandable why people take the risk. It can be better in every way. I dont know if you can say the same thing for genAI. It’s certainly quicker. I guess the argument is that you’re becoming dependent on an unreliable tool

I feel like you can make the same argument for cloud providers. It’s risky to rely on tech corps for anything. It would probably be better if anyone under 30 knew how to set up servers on-prem.

Are there many tools that you don’t control the function of? Like, if I buy a screwdriver, it’s mine. If I download the installer of an IDE, it’s mine (I think). I feel like genAI is unique in that you’re renting the tool you’re becoming reliant on (and also sometimes the tool just doesn’t work).

If you’re living paycheck to paycheck, of course you’ll “make the decision” to cheap out on goods because you don’t have the economic freedom to make any other choice. Even if it’ll be more expensive in the long term, if you don’t have the cash to get a nice item, you don’t have the cash.

I don’t know how much of this is consumer preference vs what economic systems have imposed on people. Certainly there are brain dead morons out there, but how many people, if their finances doubled, would still buy cheap garbage?

The only way Microsoft could break Steam’s hold on my library is if they started offering their games DRM free and I could just go and add them to my steam library as non steam games. Not gonna hold my breath for that.

Certainly. I had forgotten how anti consumer Sony was after all these years of them having to compete. But I think the beautify of non-gaming physical media is that it doesn’t require corporations to exist.

I don’t think movies will be next. There are enough boutique labels that aren’t owned by massive tech corps who want to incentivize streaming. Aside from licensing issues, I wouldn’t be shocked if we just saw a different company pick up the reins and start producing physical anime.

It’s not labeled anywhere! I think you just have to try it and assume that if it’s on GOG, it’ll be DRM free on steam, unless you’re capcom.

I think all it takes is one game that someone really wants to play but can’t to get them to care. It just hasn’t been a super widespread problem thus far, but as time goes on, it certainly will be.

Isn’t the whole thing that it’s less of an issue on PC because of alternate methods of obtaining games and GOG? I don’t think people care about the means of preservation, just that games are preserved. It’s not a majority of the market, but I think a lot of enthusiasts care.

I think it would be much easier to transition from scripting to C++ once you understand all the systems in play in the engine. I feel like having to learn a one-off language will be a non starter for many people wanting to get into the engine.

I agree, I wouldn’t want to use visual scripting for work (which is not game dev), but I was so overwhelmed by UE4 when I was learning that that I can’t imagine also using it with C++, which I actually understood at the time.

Enjoyed the read. Notably, as an idiot, blueprints made it near impossible to create compiler errors. It told me all the options I had; I couldn’t physically type the language wrong. Maybe that’s an issue unique to beginners, but I can’t imagine teaching college kids Verse.

I assume, like many Microsoft games now, it will require a single sign in on first boot and then you can play offline by yourself. Still not great though. They should let you just have local save data if you don’t want to use a MS account.

Oh, I guess you can hot swap them too if you have 2. So one is always charging and the other is in the controller. You don’t really need more than like 15 hours that way.

I have a 180 hours in it. My most played 3DS game. But revisiting it, it’s quite limited. It’s hard not to wish for the levels from 4, if not a bit bigger and expanded, but the characters and costumes and perk system from 3D were all great. Lots of variety.

Yeah I’m in the same position. I think I watched it 12 years ago and only really remember bits and pieces here and there. I think I stopped watching at season 6. I’m not sure how well it would hold up now.
