Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 23/01/2025Another bout of explosive cyclogenesis over the North Atlantic with "Storm Eowyn" bearing down on the UK, bringing with it strong winds and heavy rainfall. Here is ECMWF's few of the system. 020
Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 22/01/2025Tropical vortices play a larger role in the weather over the Australian continent than strong wind and heavy rain. Despite only a glancing impact on rainfall over northern Western Australia, Tropical Cyclone Sean has and will have an impact on many region this week, but not in the way you may expect 142
Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 20/12/2024Weak tropical vortices can pack a punch!! 100s of mm of rain falling over the QLD coast today. Rain will continue tomorrow and cease by Sunday as the vortex is moved offshore. 011

Reposted by Michael BarnesAilie Gallant @ailiegallant.bsky.social · 17/12/2024The accuracy of the forecasts for the extreme heat currently hitting much of Australia has been exceptional. In some areas, the forecast bounced around, but for good reason that @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social and I explained for The Conversation. The reality is weather forecasts are better than ever!theconversation.comAustralia’s latest brush with extreme heat shows just how good weather forecasting really isMuch of the country is sweltering under extreme heat that was very well forecast. But seemingly minor factors can make a big difference to what happens on the day. 13315
Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 17/12/2024Weather nerds: We did a thing and bought a house and now we OBVIOUSLY need to install a weather station. Any recommendations for a good home system? There are so many out there now! 230

Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 15/12/2024A beautiful example of anticyclonic Rossby wave breaking that will bring heat to the southeast tomorrow. The cyclonic feature (cut-off) over QLD also brought heavy rainfall that region yesterday. 093
Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 10/12/2024Hot weather is possible for early next week over SE Australia. Still uncertainty however with only a few members of the ECMWF ensemble (including the deterministic forecast) reaching into the 40s for Melbourne. Expecting a lot of bouncing around for the next few days. A forecast to watch! 121
Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 06/12/2024A classic example of early Christmas day "Forecast". It is sad to see reputable news agencies like @9news.bsky.social with broadcast meteorologists on staff and Bureau forecasters only a phone call away spew this garbage to the community. www.9news.com.au/national/chr...9news.com.auWhat the weather on Christmas Day is forecast to be in your city 032
Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 04/12/2024Potential for Australia's first landfalling tropical cyclone of the 2024/2025 season next week over the northern WA coast. Models showing remarkable consistency in the development of a tropical vortex in the area given it is 7-10 days out. An interesting forecast to follow over the coming few days! 150

Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 25/11/2024The details of a forecast matter greatly to the detail of the impact. Despite fairly certain synoptics for late this week over Australia, precipitation forecasts can range by over 100mm depending on your location in eastern Australia. Deterministic forecasts are not enough to assess risk. 031

Michael Barnes @weathermanbarnes.bsky.social · 19/11/2024Remarkable explosive cyclogenesis off of the west coast of North America in the forecast, with a predicted drop of over 50hPa in just 12 hours!!! I wonder if this is a record intensification for an extratropical low? 060
