Levi’s Stadium is forecast to be warmer than both teams’ home stadiums at kickoff. Warmer air = lower density = longer carry. Rule of thumb: ~1/2 yard per 10°. That’s roughly +2 ft vs Lumen and +7 ft vs Gillette at Levi’s. Physics is always in play. #SuperBowlLX #weatherapplied #playthewind

#SuperBowlLX is outdoors in Santa Clara. Conditions look ideal. ☀️ Some of the MOST memorable Super Bowls were shaped by weather. Weather doesn't need to be extreme to matter however... physics is always in play. #SuperBowl #weatherapplied #playthewind

Wind is rarley uniform. Terrain, coastlines, and buildings carve it into microclimates that can vary block to block or across a stadium. Basic forecasts and live wind data often miss how wind behaves at ground level and inside sports venues. Learn more! blog.weatherapplied....

This is when 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝘁𝗯𝗮𝗹𝗹 feels the 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 most 🌬️🏈 Kyle Shanahan put it simply: “We wanted to make sure that if we needed to win it on a last second field goal or throw at the end of the game, that we had that in the fourth quarter if we could.” 🧵

Understanding how wind impacts sports starts with understanding wind itself. The new WAM blog breaks down the basics: • what drives wind • how we measure it • why it changes across space and time blog.weatherapplied.... #weatherapplied #playthewind

Baseball fly balls don’t travel in a vacuum. Warmer air is less dense, and that means more carry. Our model shows roughly 4 extra feet per 10°F for home run-like balls. New blog is up with the full breakdown. blog.weatherapplied....

Based on the latest forecast, here are the projected winds above Wrigley Field at kickoff. This is at 45 feet (top of the uprights) Field level looks similar, though speeds are a bit lower. Who will #playthewind best?

THIS DAY IN HISTORY 20 years ago, Soldier Field hosted what became known as the Wind Game 🌪️. Gusts over 40 mph reshaped ball flight, pushed kicks off-course, and held the 49ers to 1 of 13 passing. 💨🏈 A clear example of atmospheric forces impacting the game! #playthewind

Two new blogs are live: 🏟️ The first sets the stage for how we will approach quantifying atmospheric effects on a variety of sports ⚾ In the second, we use our technology to apply that approach to a home run shot in baseball Check out the results! blog.weatherapplied....

Altitude changes everything. As you climb from Atlanta to Denver to Mexico City, pressure drops and the 🌍 atmosphere reshapes how far the ball can fly ⚾️⛳️🏈 Read more: blog.weatherapplied.... #weatherapplied

Here come the autumn winds… Tuesday gave us the #1 MOST wind-impacted play of the 2025 MLB Season thus far! On a windy day at Nationals Park, a 24 mph wind knocked Braves Ha-Seong Kim’s hit back a whopping 98 FEET from where it would have landed in calm conditions. #playthewind #weatherapplied

WAM Wind Impact POTW: Truist Park, September 12 Yordan Álvarez hit one at 103 mph with a 29° launch angle, a HR 74% of the time! But this time it was a fly out, as Truist Park’s wind knocked it down. 𝗪𝗶𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗰𝘁: -𝟮𝟯 𝗳𝘁 #weatherapplied #playthewind

WAM Wind Impact POTW: George M Steinbrenner Field, August 20 Trent Grisham hit a ball at 105 mph with a 46° launch and 163 ft apex, usually an out (xBA .110). At Steinbrenner Field, the shorter stands let the wind affect flight sooner, and a 5 mph breeze gave it extra carry. Wind Impact: +17 ft

Check out @weatherapplied.com's own Abhi Kesbhat presenting TOMORROW at the 2025 Saberseminar. He'll be sharing some metrics looking at better quantifying the chaotic nature of the wind's impact on Fly Balls and HR probability. Who else will be there?

The trajectory of a ball in flight isn’t just physics—it’s atmospheric physics. Air density affects drag and interacts with spin via the Magnus effect. Every weather shift changes how the ball moves. Learn more: blog.weatherapplied.com/the-aerodyna... #weatherapplied

WAM Wind Impacted play-of-the-week On Monday (6/16), Adley Rutschman hit a home run at Steinbrenner Field with a 49° launch angle, 101 mph exit velocity, and a 158 ft apex. With a BA of just 0.062, a ball with these launch parameters is an out 94/100 times.

Looking at the venue, a South/SSW prevailing wind would likely create a significant venturi effect causing wind speeds to increase as they flow into the stadium through the southern most corner. The other three corners are much more protected, according to google earth anyway.

BUF @ NE interesting FG miss. WAM's wind calculations can reveal non-wind factors, too. Here, spin, likely caused by a tilted hold, contributed more to the miss than the wind did. Can you see the tilted hold/spin? youtu.be/JjxdKGOwYr0?...
Bass 42 yard FG, no good, wide right. Initial direction 1.0 yards to the left of the center of the uprights. Spin pushed ball 3.2 yards to the right, and wind a further 2.5 yards right, resulting in a missed FG attempt.
