A lot of us learned that today—the first day of fall—day and night are the same length. That’s a lovely idea, and almost true. The equinox is the sun crossing the equator, at 8:05 p.m. Eastern. Day still gets a little extra. The equilux is when night and day match, and it arrives later this week.

On Sep 21, 1938, the "Long Island Express" made landfall with zero warning, causing absolute havoc. The catastrophic hurricane claimed roughly 680 lives and injured over 1,700 people, tearing through coastal communities, sweeping away entire neighborhoods, and reshaping the shoreline forever.

All thru the night of Sept 13, 1814, storms raged over Baltimore Harbor alongside the rocket’s red glare as the British attacked Fort McHenry. By morning on the 14th, as skies cleared, the massive garrison flag was raised—inspiring Francis Scott Key to write what became the "Star-Spangled Banner."

Today, marks the climatological peak of the Atlantic hurricane season—and an important piece of weather history! On this date in 1961, satellite imagery captured a storm system off Cape Verde that eventually became Hurricane Esther, marking the first time a major cyclone was discovered from space.

If a hurricane does not form by Friday, 2026 will tie the record for latest first hurricane since satellite tracking began. The previous record-holders were 2002 and 2013. With no tropical cyclone activity across the Atlantic over the next 7 days, 2026 is set to not only tie but break that record

126 years ago today a Category 4 hurricane hit Galveston, TX with 130+ mph winds, sending a 15-ft surge over an island only ~8 ft above sea level. It remains the deadliest U.S. natural disaster in history with 8,000–12,000 killed, and over 10,000 left homeless overnight. #weatherthen #history
