Today we celebrate Juneteenth, which marks the anniversary of the date that the last enslaved people in the United States were informed of their freedom - years after they were legally freed. Today we celebrate Black freedom, resistance, resilience, culture, and brilliance.

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, and addressing youth criminalization is a key part of creating a world with better mental health support and less stigma. What do you think it would look like if we offered our young people care and support when they're struggling rather than incarceration?
"More than 65% of young people that are arrested each year are dealing with mental illness. What if we offered our young people support instead of incarceration?"

We have spent time over the past few months dialing in on what our mission and core values are, and we have made a few updates to make sure they reflect who we are and who we strive to be! You can read our full mission statement, values, and theory of change here: nyjn.org/core-values/
"Our mission: We unite a diverse network of advocates and organizers that are working towards community-based, trauma-informed and healing-centered responses to youth needs and away from prisons and policing. We seek to end youth criminalization and incarceration. Our work centers the needs of the most marginalized youth and reimagines a future where all youth have the freedom, resources and opportunities necessary to thrive.""Values: NYJN’s mission and strategies are driven first and foremost by the belief that our youth legal systems are inextricably bound with systemic and structural racism. In order for our movement to achieve the transformative and healing-centered vision of justice we seek, we must be committed to these values: Anti-racism, Challenging systems, Dignity for all youth, Healing justice, Intersectionality, Shifting power"
