it’s not too much more recent but Low’s last two albums (for ex. Quorum on Double Negative comes to mind) feel like they push sidechaining to some really cool places! there’s a really cool thread on gearspace where the producer BJ Burton breaks down how he used certain compressors too

maybe episodic games are just more prone to those pitfalls compared to other artforms bc there are so many potential walls/points of failure??? thinking of comics/manga where the ebbs and flows can be REAL strong too but easier to shift and retool

i get you for sure! remembered you didn't like umi so i didn't mention it LOL. there's def pitfalls (so i get why you think it's a bad idea for devs) but from an artistic/doujin perspective, watching the artist change gradually and navigate their own process is a big part of the appeal imo!

totally just curious, but do you think something like higurashi is a place where this kind of stuff manages to work? to me the way it’s in conversation with its format and the audience the more it goes on is a big part of what makes it interesting!
