The canopy above Platform 21 will be fully removed to make way for a new track and a widened Platform 24. Added to the station in the 1970s, the canopy isn’t subject to the same preservation regulations as the rest of the shed, making its removal possible

Starting today, September 8th, 2026, Platform 21 at Toronto Union Station will be closing. The closure will facilitate an expanded work zone for the construction of Platforms 24–27, as well as the removal of the non-heritage designated 1970s canopy above Platform 21.

@photoblair.bsky.social - Hi! A bit of a random question, but a few years ago you showed me some vintage GO items on Twitter. I was wondering if you still happen to have any of those items?

Pretty much, it’s a list of 60 announcements and the operator decided to trigger all the required ones at once, instead of gradually throughout the trip. I don’t think there are any super hard guidelines for how the announcements have to be played, but all at once isn’t the correct way

In 1967 only one train went beyond Oakville during per hour during rush hour, so service is still significantly higher than what it was when the line opened, especially for the cities west of Oakville/Clarkson.

Yep! Lorne Park was supposed to close down when GO Transit began, but heavy pushback from the community retained the station. One train stopped at the station per day, and the station itself ended up closing due to low ridership in 1968.

Before service began, the MTARTS study was conducted, which looked over locations along Lake Ontario were suitable for new GO Transit stations. These were the considered locations along the proposed line, 1 station would be added, and 5 stations would ultimately be dropped before service began.

59 years ago today, on May 23, 1967, the first GO Transit trains departed from Oakville and Pickering bound for Toronto Union Station. GO Transit began as a single commuter line, with trains every 20 minutes during rush hour, and every hour off-peak and on weekends.
Image shows a map of the first GO Transit commuter rail line.

The line has 16 stations listed west to east:
Hamilton
Burlington
Bronte
Oakville
Clarkson
Lorne Park
Port Credit
Long Branch
Mimico
Toronto Union Station
Danforth
Scarborough
Eglinton
Guildwood
Rouge Hill
Pickering

An info box in the upper left corner of the image reads:

“Government of Ontario Transit was Canadas first publicly-owned commuter rail service. The Lakeshore
Line was first GO Transit service to operate, the line spanned from the cities of Hamilton to Pickering,
running through Downtown Toronto, making 16 stops.

Service on this line and GO Transit as a whole officially began operation on the 23rd of May, 1967”

Just for clarification, the Toronto city councillor is advocating for the Lakeshore-Midtown Line, not the Midtown Line, the LM Line was cut from the current provincial governments GO 2.0 map before it was revealed to the public. Traces of line can be seen on the map, which is why we know it exists:

To eliminate any confusion, I think Metrolinx is now committed to keeping high floor trains running on the line to Pearson. The St. Clair-Old Weston section of high platform is 130 metres long, at other stations it’s only 75 metres long.

Probably just extend the platform. By the time Metrolinx wants to Kitchener Line to stop here, the average GO train might be shorter than 315m
