On the surface, Trump's executive orders on school discipline are about rules. But what they actually do is roll back years of progress made to protect Black students from being punished and pushed out of classrooms at rates far higher than their White peers. #WayOuttaNoWay

My dear scholar, artist, and activist friend, Bryonn Bain brought the powerful Audre Lorde into our conversation by invoking Lorde’s famous black womanist-inspired phrase: “I feel, therefore I know I should be free.” This conversation is part of the #SpiritStaysFree series on www.wayouttanoway.com

All Chicago public school students now benefit from easier access to libraries. What caught our attention isn't just what it gives students access to, it's what it removes. The barriers that make access uneven. How have you accessed resources that weren’t readily available to you? #WayOuttaNoWay

In 2020, news broke that the Crenshaw Mall—the economic heart of Black Los Angeles—was being sold. Someone in the community asked: What if we bought it ourselves? Today, the Liberty Ecosystem is developing the mall into a “solidarity economy” built around Black culture. #WayOuttaNoWay

Activist Rashad Robinson said that tackling the effects of a racist system without a systemic approach is much like Whack-A-Mole. What do you think? This conversation is part of the #SpiritStaysFree series on #WayOuttaNoWay Learn more at www.wayouttanoway.com #SystemicRacism #Resilience

Chance the Rapper was raised on the South Side of Chicago, the neighborhood where the Obama Presidential Center opens this #Juneteenth. When Chance raps, “We need CBA, CBA, CBA, Barry,” he's demanding a Community Benefits Agreement to protect residents from displacement. #Housing #Gentrification

African American creative practices open up new ways to understand and find our places in the world. Poet and emcee akua naru and I spoke about the power of language to do precisely that. #SpiritStaysFree #SystemicRacism #Resilience #WayOuttaNoWay

When one door closes, Black communities have a long tradition of opening new ones for themselves: Literacy classes held in buses. Freedom schools where teaching happened under trees. Church basements. Kitchen tables. Study groups — in person and online — that become movements. #WayOuttaNoWay

Part of staying resilient under the pressures of systemic racism is to reclaim time, space and the right to move our bodies freely and at ease, together. This is the kind of thing we mean when we say, Spirit Stays Free! #WayOuttaNoWay
Bright and colorful roller skaters surround the words "Rolling Into Spring. The Black roller skating tradition dates back to a time when African American people were officially barred from entering White rinks. Black skaters went on to develop new styles of roller skating. As with so many cultural expressions, Black roller skaters changed the game with new, virtuosic polyrhythmic skating moves. When the weather gets nice, you gonna bounce, rock, skate, roll or what?"

“A politics based on a moral vision changes us; it builds bridges of mutual recognition and gives us the courage to cross them again and again.” Last week, Professor Tricia Rose reflected on Reverend Jesse Jackson’s legacy with the BBC World Service. 1/3 #WayOuttaNoWay

Injustice weighs especially heavy right now. Tales from the East Side is the narrative cornerstone of Way Outta No Way because the human impacts of systemic racism are real and embedded in lived experience. It is hard to face, sometimes–but we must grasp those impacts with clarity and knowledge. 1/4
A multi-colored, collage style graphic showing two people's hands embracing says "Injustice weighs heavy right now. So we have Robert Glasper’s “Shine” in rotation. The music and the lyrics feel to us like a loving incantation and a call to fire. What are you listening to that lifts you up? Share it with us!" The graphic also shares a piece of lyrics from the song: "“I can feel the love in here
My inner space got constellations
And all those inner conversations
They help me to shine, shine
(Shine) shine
They help me to shine (shine)
So (shine) shine
They help me to shine

(...)

Picture only offering heaven although they give you hell, like
Picture that, scripture that
Picture that brilliant sister from Sister Act
That gave us the miseducation, found those who missed the map
And gave 'em hope, just one more again, picture an extra lap
That's love”

I’ve spent a decade researching systemic racism, and I am struck with awe by the power of Black cultural resilience. This is why #WayOuttaNoWay includes Spirit Stays Free: a collection of conversations with Black artists and activists. I hope they inspire you as they do me! #BlackSky #AcademicSky

Baltimore is seeing a historic drop in violent crime rates. How? Essentially, they’re now taking a “comprehensive” (i.e. systems) approach. Investing in young people helps everyone! Watch the video for my takeaways. #BlackSky #AcademicSky
