It’s been forgotten. The club didn’t even know it existed. That was until 3 years ago when I discovered it in the Tom Tyrrell archives. You’ll find the speech in the book. You’ll hear it in the audiobook. You may even hear some of it in some of the promotion of the book over the next few weeks.

Everyone remembers that last speech from Sir Alex to Old Trafford, where he said ‘Your job now is to stand by your new manager’… well, did you know that there exists a similar speech, delivered over the PA system of the Theatre of Dreams, before his first home game against QPR on November 22 1986?

Last night Manchester United inducted their new academy scholars. They were each given a copy of Football, Taught By Matt Busby. A book I wrote about the identity of the club being given to the next generation of youth. There’s honestly no greater honour.

On JM, what he did at Real is inconsequential. He made a critical choice at end of 16/17 when CL was up for grabs in league and EL, you can’t switch on and off when you’re United, he put across the thought that you can. For me (just my opinion!) that was a big error that made lasting damage.

Thanks for comments. Evidently the system & players are linked, I don’t think I ever said they’re mutually exclusive. But there is a much longer conversation to be had, thoughts echoed by managers including Sir Alex, that the system allows too much possession in key areas for opponents.
